A winning team not to receive any Magarey Votes

In Round 16 2002, Central District won a match with a score (a goal) after the siren courtesy of Simon Arnott. The score was 11.5 to Eagles 9.13, however, no votes went to a Central player. They were awarded thus:

3: Gavin Colville
2: Robert Shirley
1: Justin Cicolella

I only have round by round voting from 2000, and I cannot find any other matches for this to have happened in that time.

It was an AFL match, but I remember this also happening in Collingwood v Fitzroy in either 1994 or 1995. Collingwood won the match, but Fitzroy received all votes in the game.

Great game spelly! From memory, the votes would be about right as we played poorly for most of the day.

R10 1995.

Collingwood were 20 points down at 3/4 time and hadnt led all day...kicked 7 goals to 1 in the last quarter to win by 14 points.

Votes were:

3 - B Boyd (F)
2 - S Atkins (F)
1 - J Baldwin (F)

that reminds me of when andrew osborne won the medal he did not get one best on ground, every vote he got was a 2nd preference vote, i think it was 22 he ended up with (spelly) which was 11 games of 2nd best

That would leave 6 games with 1 vote. So he polled in 14 games out of 22. Sounds like a medal season....

That was actually his tally - 16 votes, all 2nd preference.

Actually, it was 7 lots of 2 votes and 2 lots of 1 vote.

He polled in 8 consecutive matches - from Rounds 6 to 14: 2, 2, 2, 1, 2, 2, 2, bye, 1. His other 2 votes was in Round 16.

In the Round 12 match, that is another instance of the winning team receiving no votes.

Round 12 1998
Sturt 5.1 8.1 9.2 11.3 (69)
South 5.4 8.6 9.6 10.7 (67)
Adelaide, 4060

The votes were:
3: Trent Mills
2: Andrew Osborn
1: Nathan Genovese

There have been six matches all up from 1988; 1990-2011:

Round 22 1988; Port 12.13 Norwood 8.8
3: John Hall
2: Garry McIntosh
1: Mark Ducker

Round 1 1995; Eagles 15.14 North 14.17
3: Tim Perkins
2: Daniel Grantham
1: Scott Bamford

Round 3 1996: Central 16.9 North 16.5
3: Josh Francou
2: Wayne Rosenboom
1: Brendon Parker

Round 6 1997: Central 8.6 North 7.4
3: Richard Gerke
2: Damian Squire
1: Tim Davis

Round 12 1998: Sturt 11.3 South 10.7
3: Trent Mills
2: Andrew Osborn
1: Nathan Genovese

Round 16 2002: Central 11.5 Eagles 9.13
3: Gavin Colville
2: Robert Shirley
1: Justin Cicolella

The 1988 match is amazing, considering Port won by 29 points. Or perhaps the umpires thought the 6.6 to 0.1 final quarter by Port was null and void as far as consideration to votes went.

In the 21 draws within this period, just once has all the votes gone to one team:

Round 2 2009; West 11.11 Eagles 10.17
3: James Ezard
2: Ryan Ferguson
1: Damian Cupido

And how about a team who was pantsed yet someone from that side getting BOG?

120 points is the record:
Round 4 1990; Glenelg 29.19 South 11.7
3: Nigel Smart
2: John Fidge
1: Tony Symonds

Maybe the umpires saw the potential in Nigel Smart; in his first season, he got two votes here:

Round 16 1988; Port 33.24 South 10.3 (159 points the margin)
3: Roger Kerr
2: Nigel Smart
1: Martin Leslie

For the one vote, the margin is lower than those two:

Round 19 1991; Eagles 27.12 Sturt 8.8 (118 points)
3: Scott Morphett
2: Damian Meade
1: Andrew Johns

Johns also got a vote in the next biggest loss, 113 points vs Norwood Round 14 1990.

However, as a percentage to the winning and losing scores, this is the lowest % that a side has had a vote in:

Round 15 1988; Norwood 17.22 South 3.2 (for that match alone, South would have a % of 13.89; Norwood with 86.11)
3: Stephen Rowe
2: Steven Richardson
1: Craig Dewhirst

Spelly, my memory may be playing tricks on me, but I thought there was a Central v South game at Elizabeth where Central won by over 20 goals, yet a South player got at least a third preference vote? Would have been in the last few seasons.

IIRC North belted the living suitcase out of West in 1990 at Prospect in 1990 and Grant Fielke got three votes.

That is in here, the biggest winning margins in which the winner did not get three votes:

The match you recall CK, was actually the Advertiser award - Doug Robertson giving Jaxon Crabb one vote in the 195 point loss to Central in Round 9 2002.
