SANFL Childhood memories

Continuing the theme of whether you do or dont live in your club's zone and why you barrack for your club, what are some of your childhood memories of SANFL? (Game highlights and milestones, but also in general terms).

For starters, I loved the big crowds, cheer squads and the goal umpires wearing the lab coat and round hats.

I grew up on Kangaroo Island, so there was never the chance to get to an SANFL game as such... so I remember that when players used to come visit the island they would get a heroes welcome from all the kids !!

Growing up, i only lived in Adelaide for one year (rest was spent in regional areas of the state), that was in 1980, when i saw 3/4's of Port's games, but had moved to the Eyre Peninsula by the time the finals series came around.

I can remember being in awe of the Port Adelaide side, and had goose bumps every time i saw them run out on the ground. Loved getting the Footy Budget every week i went, although now i wish i'd kept them all, all these years later. Remember going home to watch the reply, which included the Kenmax Goal, Mark and Play of the Day.

For the rest of the 80's after i'd moved away from Adelaide, i recall eagerly purchasing the Footy Times every week, and reading what the various writers had to say such as The Hatchett and Dick Jones (also wish i'd kept my copies of the FT's as well!). Loved watching "The Big Replay" every Saturday night, and would be doubly happy if my team was featuring. Enjoyed the commentary of all the blokes such as Peter Marker, Rick Keegan, Ian Day.

This is an easy one for me.

My Auntie and I sat about a foot away from the TV at the pointy end of 1978. I was 8, she was 18, SCREAMING at the TV. She a Norwood supporter, myself a Blues supporter. I reckon I was screaming at the TV for at least 45 minutes and at the end of the day was hoarse, even at that age. She was exhausted but it's a day I'll remember for the rest of my life.

I couldn't recall the 76 premiership, so this was my first real chance at understanding a GF.

Later on I'd coax my old man into going to Sturt Torrens games. At which time I'd sit in the stats man's box (a mate of mine's dad who was official stats man of Sturt) and watch the blues get over the line. Little did I know but my old man HATED watching footy. Still does.

Kelloggs cards. Which meant having to eat Corn Flakes as opposed to the prefered Coco Puffs during the 1971 season.

1982 Flap Jack album and player cards, Big Ben cards, collecting player badges on my scarf and getting home and watching KGs Footy Show!

*Robbie Muir jumping the fence at Thebarton Oval is the one thing that really stands out for me, was about 7 or 8 at the time, dont think i will ever forget that.
*Going to primary school and copping it from all my mates who barracked for Port (but never went to the games) because Torrens had lost on the weekend.....again!

*Helping to hold up the Torrens banner for the last game against Woodville
*Torrens winning the 1990 reserves Grand Final

Ahh, a bit b4 my time in that case. I was more a mid to late 70's Footy Show follower. Eldon was way before my time. Cheers for the info though.

I remember the Footy show, then the wrestling, then the SAFA on channel 9 on Sundays. Good times those.

The hardest man I remember.

He would run through a brick wall to get the ball.

When he gave his end of 1/4 addresses, I would tremble....

Baked beans on toast in front of the fire while watching the reserves (thanks Mum), then the walk to Elizabeth Oval.
Getting attacked by magpies walking through Fremont Park (how could you call that a park back then !)
My first game in '67 against Port, just wanted to see the 'Dogs kick a goal, we kicked 1.6 that day (how times have changed).
Robin Mulholland, Julian Swinstead, Tony Casserley, Phil Haughan.
The first ever win against Port (1973 ?)
Wishing Ian McKay good luck when he was walking past the Caltex at the East (worked there Sat'dy mornings), he turned to thank me, missed his step, stood awkwardly on the kerbing, and limped off into the distance
The first game at Footy Park, two foot gaps between the fence and the entrances, just walked in.
Geoff Gillies being out injured with bruised buttocks (what the hell was he doing in his spare time).
And those immortal words of Daryl Hicks, "Brendan Maguire is playing quite well", who would have thought that as a result of those words 12 years later I would be standing with a bunch of idiot mates behind a giant cardboard corporate box and meet the future wife

I think it was Ron Kneebone's first game, or if not one of his first few:
He came on from the bench to a position in defence.
He ran at a loose ball and I saw Torren's Mick Clingly line him up, obviously intending to take the new kid out.
The bodies clashed. Mick Clingly was on the ground and Ron Kneebone cleared the ball.

The only time "Bill" Wedding threw a punch. Neil Kerley had been dishing it out to him all day.
The punch missed because NK backed up and kept backing.

West Adelaide FF Peter[?] Phipps picking up a small dog that had strayed on to Adelaide Oval[?] and throwing it off the field almost skewering it on the pickets - even Westies supporters booed him for that.

Neil Kerley stopping Denis Modra with an elbow to the throat. I think it was him who got Brian Bowe's cheek bones too.

Wally Miller collapsing on field under Don Lindner's knees in his back. His sudden onset of Polio was announced later that week.

John Moody for Norwood losing a kidney to a knee during one of his few games for Norwood.

No wonder I took up Hockey at high school...

No wonder I took up Hockey at high school...

That would have been Kneebone's 4th game.

The John Moody incident was in his 1st and only league game, against North Adelaide at Norwood Oval, round 17 1958.

I am older than Columbo , but I was there when muir jumped the fence .
So my childhood memories
I was there when 19 men were on the field against West in Freddie Bills last game.
I was there when Shotgun Miller kicked a goal to win a game
I was there when Rocky Roberts came back from Richmond .I didn't remember when he left.
Going to Football Park when there were no seats or shelter .Getting soaked with my mates and not being able to get out the rain.
I was there during the years that west torrens only won 1 or 2 games.mostly against Woodville and Centrals .

One of my earliest memories is going to footy park to watch one of my friends brothers playing for torrens.There were a heap of us kids and a few parents .I don't recall the guys first name but his last name was Alexander and he was a big lad .Can recall my Dad being mad because us kids sat in the boot with the boot open .It was a huge old yank tank how we made it there and back I have no idea .
I can recall going up the street to the shallows family(the brothers who played for torrens) house .Playing with the younger kids and the older Brothers being there along with Peter Cousins(I think it was peter.).

Funny apart from the footy park games in the rain most weeks the ovals were packed .In the days when Knuckles coached the Eagles the crowds were huge .

I first showed an interest in footy when I discovered a stack of discarded football budgets in our shed as a result of my brother's scout group paper drive. I recall reading through the lists of names, already knowing some like Neil Kerley. I remember being amused by the name Costello because I already knew Abbott & Costello.

Then I began collectng Mobill Footy Cards and Coca Cola bottle tops. I watched the replay of the 1964 GF on TV, so I made dad promise to take me to some footy the following year.

Earliest memories of matches were wins over Sturt & Port Adelaide, and both those side played in the GF that year. My favourites were Bill Wedding, Ian Brewer, and Ron Kneebone.

Perhaps one of the funniest memories were against West Torrens at Norwood Oval. Ron Kneebone stooped to pick up the ball. As he did, a young and skinny Peter Phillipou ran in to bump him. Ron saw him soming so he braced himself to ride the bump. Phillipou bounced off Kneebone, hit the ground hard and was taken from the ground. It was like trying to knock over a brick wall.
