Kicked after the siren to win the game

How often has there been a kick to win the game on/after the siren?

Offhand I can only think of 3 occurrences:

- Some Port player (forget who) got a very dodgy free kick from umpire Rick Charlesworth at the end of a game v Glenelg @ Footy Park in 1981 (? or thereabouts). He kicked truly but only managed to tie the scores.

- Jim West, Glenelg v Sturt, Footy Park, Escort Cup 1986. Glenelg started the last term 10 goals behind, and won by a point thanks to Westy 8)

- A North player, Glenelg v North, Glenelg Oval, 1992 (?). Kicked after the siren but missed, Glenelg escaped with a 2 point win.

I'd also mention Plugger kicking a point in a preliminary final in 1996, but that was in the inferior AFL.

Darren Harris (South) against Port at Adelaide Oval, I think it was 1984. The crowd had already started rushing onto the ground a'la Kerry Good in the VFL Night Grand Final that he won for North Melbourne in the same situation.
Time distorts memories, but I reckon Harris's torpedo was a good 60 metres.

1982 - Andy Porplyzia ... Think it was the Anzac Day re-match.

Bays and Port had some cracker games in the 80's (although I guess they were needed to space the GF mauling out  *runs*)

Cornes at Norwood Oval in 1978 from memory.

Could also add Harry Miller (Port) against South last year at Alberton, although he was around 55m out. His miss gave South their 10th win at Alberton in history, IIRC.

Mark Mickan v Norwood at Richmond in 1984 ... IIRC Peter Mead kicked a winning point for Port v South in a final in 1965, was it after the siren?

Yeah! That is my most memorable SANFL moment. It was in 1977 though.
Glenelg lead all day, Norwood came home with a blinding final quarter and hit the lead late in the game.
Norwood crowd were going ballistic! It looked doomed for the Bays.
Noel Avery kicks from the wing, Cornes flies over a big pack of players to take a speccy.
Siren sounds!
Kids run onto the ground ( I was one of them). I watched the ball sail through the sticks from the true centre half forward position.
Pandemonium!! (much jumping up and down with raised fists)
Cornes is chaired from the ground to the cheers of the Tiger faithfull.

Eagles got done by Centrals a few years ago - think it was Simon Arnott? IIRC Eagles lead all day and ended up losing something like 11.5 to 9.13.

Andrew Osborne in South v Eagles 91 Reserves GF - from memory Eagles hit the front, from the centre bounce South scrambled kick forward, Osborne scrambled another kick and it bounced through as the siren was going.

Can't think of too many others. Plenty where there has been a kick with just enough time for play to restart.

Whilst it wasn't after the siren IIRC Craig McRae kicked a goal deep into time on at Footy Pk in Rd 1 or 2 of 1994 to put Glenelg in front against Norwood. IIRC it was Norwoods first game in Lycra. Spelly??

It was kicked from the Campbell pocket from 50 m out on about a 45 angle. Lucky he was a left footer which allowed him to swing the ball back in.

1984.Harris intercepted a short pass from R.Ebert in the dying seconds of the game. The siren sounded and Harris went back took a deep breath and sent a torpedo through about post-height.
These days 'ol southies reckon it was at least '80m!: but I reckon it was about 60m .It was a truly great win.

Round 4 1928
Sturt 3.2 6.6 8.8 11.14 (80)
North 4.2 8.3 11.6 12.8 (80)
Unley, 7500

Norths' Peter Leahy goaled to level the scores after the final bell.

Round 9 1942
West/Glenelg 2.3 8.8 11.14 14.17 (101)
Port/Torrens 5.4 7.7 11.9 14.11 (95)
Adelaide, 16000

In this match, W/G scored a goal after the quarter time bell, the three quarter time bell and the full time bell. Ted Robjent was the player who goaled after the final bell.

Round 19 1982
Glenelg 6.4 8.4 12.5 17.11 (113)
Norwood 4.3 9.7 13.9 16.13 (109)
Football Park, 16388

Paul Weston won the match with the last kick of the game.

Others noted that I can find the exact game:
Round 4 1982
Port 3.4 8.10 9.13 11.15 (81)
Glenelg 2.3 3.3 9.6 12.9 (81)
Football Park, 22106

Round 4 1986 (Night Series)
Glenelg 1.0 2.4 2.4 12.7 (79)
Sturt 2.4 6.4 11.9 11.12 (78)
Football Park

Round 10 1984
South 5.2 9.6 12.8 18.9 (117)
Port 4.1 8.5 11.8 17.13 (115)
Adelaide, 13093

Round 2 2008
South 3.1 8.4 13.8 16.9 (105)
Port 4.6 8.8 11.11 14.18 (102)
Alberton, 3036

Round 11 1984
West 2.3 7.10 12.16 14.20 (104)
Norwood 4.5 8.5 13.7 15.11 (101)
Richmond, 6107

2nd Semi 1965
Port 5.3 10.5 13.8 17.10 (112)
South 3.1 6.4 10.9 16.11 (107)
Adelaide, 37628

Round 12 1977
Glenelg 3.0 8.5 13.7 15.8 (98)
Norwood 1.3 4.6 9.9 13.17 (95)
Norwood,10452

Round 16 2002
Central 2.2 6.3 8.4 11.5 (71)
Eagles 5.5 7.8 7.10 9.13 (67)
Woodville, 2458
It was Arnott, and the siren went as the ball was on its way to goal.

Reserves GF 1991
South 9.1 11.5 13.6 15.9 (99)
Eagles 4.0 9.5 12.10 14.13 (97)
Football Park

I think in this Reserves match, West kicked a goal and the siren sounded about three seconds after the re-start. This was an extremely windy day:

Round 8 2000
West 1.0 5.3 5.4 9.8 (62)
Eagles 4.6 5.7 7.8 8.10 (58)
Richmond

The match in 1994 was this one:
Round 1 1994
Glenelg 3.5 7.8 11.12 13.18 (96)
Norwood 5.0 8.6 11.12 13.16 (94)
Football Park, 6068

If anyone has got the Reserves scores from that match jotted down in a Budget or something, I'd love to know, because that's a score I don't have!

It was actually a goal that Peter Mead kicked. They were 5 points down and won by 1 point. The crowd run onto the field as the siren sounded with South 5 pts in front, South defenders were unable to take a run and jump at the ball as it floated through, just out of reach of the defenders.

In 1966, Sturt defeated Port Adelaide at Alberton Oval (round 13) with a goal by Keith Chessell after the siren.

In 1967, (round 4 at Adelaide Oval), Ray Button booted a goal after the siren to defeat Norwood by 4 points.

Cain Ackland had a shot for goal from 50 out against Norwood in 04 at Adelaide Oval. Missed. Sturt won.

Tony Brown kicked a goal on the siren to tie the game against Glenelg at the Bay in 01. Port had come from 3 goals down with about 90 seconds left. The siren went as the ball was in mid-air.

Bryan Beinke also kicked a goal on the siren to defeat Norwood at the Parade around 01. Similar to Browns kick, the siren went right as the ball was kicked and the Pies won by 6 points.

That was bloody amazing that kick. I was watching it on TV because it was a Sunday game from memory. Obviously I was going for Souths vs the common enemy. I reckon he was pretty hard on the boundary line and he was hell of a long way out. In the days before the 50 meter arch was painted on the ground it was hard to tell how far, but it was easily 60 meters, probably closer to 65 meters IMO. I really thought he had no chance, just too far out, but when he let that screwie go it just kept on sailing, and sailing. A huge pack of players had formed in the goal square, Monday's Advertiser caught the moment well with a photo side on to the action, showing Danny Hughes ( I reckon) with the perfect sit at the back of the pack, and the ball just passed his clenched fist. I reckon in all that ball had to travel an extra 5 meters to beat the pack, I reckon it was coming down at a pretty sharp angle after being in orbit so long. In all the kick possibly travelled about 70 meters.

Another famous kick after or on the siren, Western Australia vs South Australia as Footy Park in about 1984. WA player, named Ball I think, kicks a hooked running goal on the siren and WA win by about 3 points.

Port v Central, Adelaide Oval, 1991.

Dogs leading all day, up by about seven goals in the third quarter. Even at the 21 minute mark of the last term they had a comfortable four goal buffer.

Still not enough!

Darren Smith kicked a goal on the siren in general play.

Port win by six points.

Sunday it was, live on TV. Couldn't believe it when Harris kicked that goal.

Reakon the player in question was Ben Harris, Port's regular full-back in '84.

Hughes joined Melbourne after the '83 season.

Ball was B.O.G. that day.

But he was the WA ump.

The dirty, cheating, thieving WA ump...

I remember a North v Port game at Prospect around 1985

North lead all day then Port staged a comeback

Craig Bradley had a late kick from the boundary to win it for Port .... I can't remember if it was after the siren or not. I do remember the ground being absolutely packed as North had started their mid 80s resurgence.
