South Adelaide History Book.....?

Postby Mr66 » Wed Dec 03, 2008 10:59 pm

Has anyone published a history on South?
They're the only (SA) club I don't have.
If one person does it, it's insanity. If millions do it, it's religion.

Charles Knuckey wrote one in the 60's. That's the only one I know of. Hopefully someone wil do another at some stage, being the second oldest club.

At the risk of sounding nasty, and I'm really not trying to be, perhaps they've been waiting for a reason to update it since the 1960s. A South premiership would certainly speed up the process somewhat.

I think you may be on to something there AH.
I'm gonna sit back, crack the top off a Pale Ale, and watch the Double Blues prevail

I think a history of the club would be fascinating reading.
It would help explain to me the culture of the club - from the outside, it's always interesting to watch.

2 major events happened in Adelaide in 1964. The Beatles toured Adelaide and South Adelaide won the premiership. It's a very close race to see which event will be the first to return to Adelaide - despite half of their squad being dead, I think The Beatles remain firm favourites to return to Adelaide before South win another Grand Final.

I can help you there. He has been training the house down and all feed back from the coaches has been 1st class.

Copee was at the club(shoes) last wed and will be there again with the lads tonight for our last training run and a few drinks and bbq.

Celebrating the '64 premiership are we?

.. and I am always intrigued what "training the house down" means and also such a feat before Xmas means nothing

Gerry at Toss of the Coin has a copy of this at the moment, and calling it a book would be very generous. It's more a pamphlet. It's the same size as the old footy budgets and contains 12(?) pages of writing and a couple of team photos.
As I said earlier hopefully someone is a planning a more complete book on South soon.

Unfortunately Jock Wood passed away far too young. He would have taken the task on, and done a damned good job of it.

Or hopefully a better job than he did on the North one. Very average at best.

Johnny Wood was a ferocious researcher.

Though not perhaps the best writer going around...

That's what got me. I have his book on the Magarey Medal (SA Greats) which is magnificent. Whereas the North book was done in a hurry and much of the early history in particular skipped over or just ignored. Also no players list which I know was done by Ian Everett in the 80's so I presume John would have had access to it.

South has a (volunteer) historian - John Althorpe is his name. You can contact him through the club, I'm sure.
