Most number of consecutive games?

by spell_check » Fri May 05, 2006 11:05 pm

I don't know of the actual record, but the most I know of is 167+ by Scott Morphett for Torrens and Eagles.

167 has a plus next to it because I don't know when he missed games in 1988, so it could be something like 175 matches in a row.

He played 167 games in a row between Round 1 1989 and Round 9 1996 - this excludes pre season games.

Other 100+ games in a row I know of:

158 by Alf Roberts (Torrens) - c.1949 to c.1958
135 by Andrew Rogers (Eagles) - Round 1 1993 to Round 6 1999 - excludes pre season matches.
111* by Brett James (Norwood) - Elimination Final 2000 to Round 5 2006 - unbroken.

Also, Brett O'Hara has played his 61st consecutive game tonight - from Round 17 2003 onwards.

I presume that this list may not be as long as you may expect, as the best players used to miss games when off playing interstate games.

Yeah, that's correct. As I mentioned to you about the Magarey votes in 1989, that was the last time a State match was played at the same time as an SANFL round - 21 rounds worth were counted. In the Torrens book, Bruce Lindsay missed Round 12 on State duty (2nd July). He played all other 21 minor round matches. But all the other players noted above did not miss any on State duty.

Gerrard Bennett played his 100th match last weekend, and it's a consecutive run, so he makes the table.

I knew that Pat Broderick had played all of his career in consecutive matches, but that fantastic 1897-1944 Torrens Book has enabled me to find out when he made his debut.

Jack Tredrea played 108 consecutive games for South from his debut match in Round 9 1903, to Round 1 1912. A poisoned finger kept him out of the Round 2 1912 match.

I've updated the table to last weekend. Ben Kane is only five matches away from joining this select list.

Ben Kane ends his run of consecutive matches on 169, equal second on this table of known sequences of 100 or more. Nick Liddle is the newest addition to the table:
