Spellmeister,

If Glenelg loses this weekend (fat chance ;) ) it would be the third week running that the top ranked team has lost. Would this be some kind of record?

It might be, I don't know of any where three in a row happened, two in a row definitely has before the last two weeks.

Actually, it has happened in 2005, so I think it's not that uncommon.

Eagles in Round 6 2005 lost to South whilst on top.
The following round, another loss, this time to North.
Sturt took top spot, but lost it in Round 8 by losing to Norwood.

At this point in time, the SANFL must have been having kittens, because between Rounds 8 and 11 the top two clubs were Eagles and South.

Another occasion was in Rounds 7, 8 and 9 2001, where Norwood (Rd 7), Eagles (Rd 8) and Central (Rd 9) all lost top spot by losing in those weeks.

The third occasion I've found is in Rounds 2, 3 and 4 1996 - South, Norwood and Glenelg were top and lost in those rounds respectively.
Rounds 3, 4 and 5 1992 - West, South and Norwood were all top and lost in those rounds.
Rounds 22, 23 and 24 1991 - South were top then lost, Eagles took top spot then lost twice to give it back to South.

I've looked at the other years that are have likely to have had this happened, and I can't find anything more than three losses.
There was an interesting one in 1934, West Torrens lost three games in a row(Rds 13-15) but still kept top spot after each loss. This was due to Sturt losing in Rounds 14 and 15. Torrens won in Round 16, but lost in Round 17 enabling Port and Glenelg to jump in to 1st and 2nd.

Thanks spelly. Not as rare as I'd thought, it seems.

But how many times have each team lost by at least 85 points?

Not that I am suggesting anything for this weekend... ;)
