Kensington Oval

Just wondering if anyone knows when the last match for premiership points was played at Kensington Oval? I know South had it as a home ground at one stage, and I would suggest that so would have some of the other SANFL sides, does anyone have a list of which sides have used Kensington for home matches? Lastly, does anyone know if the venue has been used since then for Trial Matches?

Norwood played there between 1882 and 1897.

Between 1945 and 1963 it was only a neutral ground.

The last match was:
Round 19 1963
North 2.3 7.5 12.6 16.9 (105)
Glenelg 1.5 4.8 7.14 13.18 (96)
Kensington, 4874

In 1897 there were also matches played that did not involve Norwood. In that season, there were only three grounds used - Adelaide, Alberton and Kensington. Jubilee Oval was used from 1898 instead of Kensington because of the time it took to get to Kensington via tram.

jubilee oval is that the oval on north tce where the uni stands now ? or is that a different oval ?

another place they played league footy was at the wayville showgrounds.....which incidently CK has been pushing to get a night game played there on the first night of the royal adelaide show which i think has good merit by taking the game to the people

This is the best photo I have found of it (courtesy of a mate who works at the SLSA). This is around the turn of the century. Gives a really good indication of small it was.

I posted this in another thread here, but Jubilee would have been about 136.3 by 131.7 metres in terms of the playing area.

In 1909 it was said about Jubilee Oval:

"The Jubilee Oval is too small for a proper game of football. So often does the ball run out of bounds that the constant shrill blast of the umpires whistle and the temporary stoppage of the game become a nuisance."

Yes, I believe that's where Kensington were in the Don Bradman days.

Certainly were he lived in the next street over from the Oval. Holden St IIRC. Kensington would have moved to their current grounds to make way for the Olympic Sports field makeover

Correct - he used to come down to Kings College and coach us lads in primary school. I have a photo of him teaching me the back defence

What would the Don know about a back defence? From the footage I've seen, he never played one :)
