1977 Ardath Cup Help

Postby Mark_Beswick » Sun Sep 20, 2009 9:14 pm

Can anyone assist with the final 20 for the West Adelaide team v E-Freo at Norwood Oval April 12, 1977. WAFC annual report did not count this game to the players stats. The Annual reports before 1977 and post 1977 count these NFL and other cup games but for some reason not 1977. Another reason why these games must be separated from H&A Official figures. I have determined from the Advertiser, Football Budget, Football times, (Not the News as their is a page missing from the state library holding for this game) that the following definetely played for West Adelaide:

Beswick, Buckley, Davoren, Grimwood, Gurney, Hayes, G. Hewitt, D. Kennedy, Kuhlmann, Ravlich, Stevenson, Summerton and Mark Williams.

The squad for the game included these players (one which dropped out???)
Donaldson, Groves, Hollick, Kersten, Loveday, Meuret, Pierson and S. Tait. Does anyone have a match programme or VHS/Beta Copy of the game? Short of ringing each of the players above, does anyone have any other sources that might narrow down the playing list for that game?

I have now removed Cup games/NFL Game etcs for WAFC games from 1897-1903, 1924-1960, 1975-2009. Quite a few 200 club players now fall below 200 H&A Games! NAFC and WAFC are re-writing our records spo we match the WAFL, VFA and VFL/AFL records. Players removed from this list will have their missing games re-credited in a separate list for Cup Games as is the case with AFL players.

I'd be happy to see a full list of results from the 1977 Ardath Cup if anyone's got them.

Sorry can't help with your question Mark but this is very disturbing. Super might slip below 400!

The big question is - who won??? That's a pretty good looking Westies side.

I'd drop Groves. :)

East Fremantle did:

E.Fremantle 2.3 5.4 7.4 14.9 (93)
W.Adelaide 3.2 4.5 8.6 9.9 (63)
Norwood, 1500

Mark, I've got this match down as played on the 19th of April; Preston vs NSW was on the 12th, is this correct or are you sure it's the other way around?

Hi Spelly

Westies definetly on the 12th - I checked the Western Australian and they copied the Advertiser write up. Their article appears on the Thursday 14th.

I had preston (Now Northern Bullants) playing NSW combined on the 5th of April - I might need to double check this.

On the 19th I had ACT v Caulfiled

Were these games televised?

Tks Adelaide Hawk.

Fascinating comp and it would be great to see something like this again but we all know it will never happen.

Oh for the day when Central would roll over to Dandenong.

BTW - you Redlegs had an armchair ride until the semis!

I remember going to the West v East Fremantle game but, sorry Mark, can't help with your query. Wouldn't an official team list have been lodged with the SANFL?
I always thought this is what a national competition should have been - local teams playing against their interstate counterparts. Quite possibly financially untenable but would have been ideal otherwise.

Me and a couple of mates went to the Port Melbourne v Queensland game. I reckon they would have been lucky if there was 200 people there.

I don't know if they were all televised, but what I'll do is show you the details I have. I know a couple of dates in there are wrong:

That may be true, but the problem we faced was coming up for our next SANFL game whilst in pursuit of the Ardath Cup. I think we lost badly on the Saturday each time we won a cup match. By the time finals came around, we were spent. Still $50,000 (big money for the time) was adequate compensation.

Losing Jim Thiel with a knee injury in the first cup game didn't help either. He was in blistering form prior to that.

Thanks everyone above -

Regarding lodgements of teams, the SANFL hasn't kept these and I have team sheets for West Adelaide from 1980 - Present Day.

Looks as though I might need to make some phone calls. If I find the final 20, I'll post them so others dont have to look in the future. I know I am going to have the same problems for other SANFL teams when I get around to doing their cup squads in the future. No doubt I'll post something similar in the future - The collective wisdom of posters is staggering > Cheers all!

ps - Spelly, we will have to meet one day in the near future. I'm sure we could have a ball looking at each others databases and swapping ideas and notes. I need to learn how to post tables like you do on this forum when I get time.

That would be great. :) With the tables, all it takes is a screen capture program to capture that part of the screen, then upload the captured image onto here or through a image sharing site like Imageshack or Photobucket.
