20th CENTURY BETTER CLUB STURT, NORWOOD OR NORTH ADELAIDE?

Sturt -
12 Premierships
17 Wooden Spoons
10 Runners Up
Won 3, drawn 1 and lost 1 against North in Grand Finals
Lost 2 and won 0 against Norwood in Grand Finals
Norwood -
15 Premierships
5 Wooden Spoons
14 Runners Up
Won 2 and lost 0 against Sturt in Grand Finals
Lost 3 and won 1 against North in Grand Finals
North -
13 Premierships
3 Wooden Spoons
13 Runners Up
Won 3 and lost 1 against Norwood in Grand Finals
Lost 3, drawn 1 and won 1 against Sturt in Grand Finals
So, in order, which is the better club and which is worse? Is it Sturt, who have a great record against North in Grand Finals but have so many wooden spoons? Is it Norwood, who have 2/3 more premierships against the others, but have a bad record vs North in Grand Finals and more wooden spoons than them? Or is it North, who were only bottom 3 times in the whole century and prefered to play Norwood than Sturt in the big game?

I've always thought that a Premiership was the ultimate success and a wooden spoon was the ultimate embarassment so a fair way to compare clubs (and their status) was simply to take their premierships and take off their wooden spoons.
If you do that North and Norwood are level and Sturt are miles behind and I think that's a fair comparison.
North were probably the most consistent achiever over the entire term of the century being the only club of those 3 to win close to a flag every decade.
Sturt were definately the best club of the 60s out of those 3 club but over the term of the entire century weren't close.
Premiershhps minus wooden spoons:
North 10
Norwood 10
Sturt -5
Decades premierships won in of the 20th century:
North 9
Norwood 7
Sturt 6
You can also add North/Norwood's combined premierships in the war years to put them further in front of Sturt.

How about a points based system-
Flag: 3 pts
R/Up: 1 pt
Spoon: -2
Norwood: 49
North: 36
Sturt: 12
You can debate the weighting of the points, I think that is fair in the overall scheme of things.
Fwiw, I agreed with Dasher's assessment, & my system backs that up.

IIRC about ten years ago an Adelaide chapter of the Australian Sports History association (Don't know the correct name of the organisation but something along those lines) removed Port and Norwood from the equation to work out who was the 3rd best club in the SANFL.
After much discussion between North and Sturt they came up with North 3rd and Sturt 4th.
Ont the basis of North being more consistant, more flags and fewer spoons.
As I said on the Glenelg v gone but not forgotten thread premierships are all that counts
So Norwood, North = Sturt
My flawed maths comes up with Norwood 16 flags since 1900, North 12 and Sturt = 12.
Sorry to north supporters butif you want to be technical the year 1900 is officially part of the 19th century a century goes from 01-00 in a calander. The the 20th century started on 01/01/1901. Don't blame me, blame Pope Gregory the eventor of the Gregorian calander....

Sturt would have to be over-rated. The Big 3
phallusy ( ) was probably before Sturt won their 8 Wooden Spoons

well mate...making the big one in 98 after almost folding in 95-96 then taking the holy grail in 02 AFTER the 8 wooden spoons just reaffirms it
the next 20 years might be different however when the next generation moves in...lets hope the SANFL is as strong as ever then

The big three in supporter base terms. Although Drebin argues North have a greater supporter base than Sturt.
Jimmy,
I am still waiting on your explanation for why you rate Sturt ahead of North Adelaide.

I like the way North win premierships consistently in nearly every decade (the 1910's being the exception, from memory) without prolonged periods in the wilderness.

Win/Loss percentages
Norwood 57.60%
North 51.01%
Sturt 49.60%
Norwood have a positive win/loss record over North and Sturt and infact all, except Port and Eagles
North have negative win/loss records against Central, Norwood, Port, Sturt and Eagles
Sturt have negative win/loss records against Central, Norwood, Port and Eagles
The games won percentage is the same order as the flags won.
To me Norwood clearly win this debate.

Lets see in 20 or 30 years if the Eagles rae still ahead of North and Sturt.

drebin north might have a bigger supporter base than Sturt but is it that the 66 and 76 grandfinals that are the 2 record crowds at AO and FP respectively. The only record that north v port games has any significance in, is norths great performance in the 89 gf.
