Good on you McAlmanac, it was a bit of a joke response to the perennial lists of the same old stars, but that's a very credible list I think. I'd only take issue with Moss, I reckon you have him a bit high. I'd maybe swap with him Mumford who, though ungainly, was pretty effective.

This thread is more to my liking. We always bang on about the Robrans, Eberts, etc, but here are some names of some very good players who people rarely mention. I'll always recall the blistering speed of the racehorse Warren Packer dashing down the wing, a great servant for the Norwood Football Club.

Poor old Dazzling Darrell Moss is possibly best remembered for being the one to drop out of the 1969 GF team to make way for Royce Hart. He was one of those players who gave 100%, and sometimes made errors because he was trying too hard. I recall one funny incident when he showed the ball to an opponent in an attempt to "sell the dummy", and the opponent took the ball out of his hand. :)

I recall Leon Milde marking and kicking the winning goal for Port Adelaide against Richmond in an end of season Rothmans Cup match at Subiaco oval in 1971. Milde & Marrett, the twin towers of Port.

Stephen Boehm is one of the very few players to wear glasses on the field, and gave Central great service at CHB.

The great Bronte Mumford. To this day, still my best mate's favourite player. Called thumper because he rarely won the ball, he would thump it away from his opponent. Rarely recorded more than a few in the kicks column.

Greg Wild, a very talented ruckman for Sturt in their golden era and thoroughly deserving of top billing in this list.

And finally, my mate Phil Cox, a nuggety rover for South. I will always remember him sitting in his chair at a BBQ after the 1979 Grand Final and being stirred up by the Port fans about them only kicking 3 goals. He took it well :)

Sturt went to Whyalla to look at a young up and coming star called Graham Cornes but ended up signing Greg Wild instead.

When is someone going to create a topic of top 10's that involves galloping Lee Robson? :D

Exactly my thoughts, AH.

I must admit, I didn't know where to put Darrell Moss as he was the only one I hadn't seen play - I just went on being in a successful side. It would appear that one player was chosen from each club, if you count Dragan Tankosic as a Torrens player and not Woodville. Also, Larry Krieg started out at Sturt without playing a League game. He did crack it for a Football Budget poster, so that should have bumped him up the list a bit!

Phil Cox - part of the South mosquito fleet. Maybe we could have a "Rate the South Mosquito Fleet" thread. Cox would sit somewhere between Mark Naley and Gary Bracegirdle....

And so the unobtrusive Greg Wild played in more premiership sides than flamboyant Graham Cornes.

How about 10 Greatest Socks Down Players?

Garry McIntosh would have to rate pretty highly.

Yes McAlmanac, I chose one from each club and I believe Tankosic played 1 game at Torrens before crossing to Woodville.
One thing I remember about Moss is he always (in my memory at least) wore his white ankle supports outside his socks - it was one of those things that used to annoy me. I think Peter Nicks might have done that too, and I can remember Murray Weideman doing it many times.

An excellent summary. Missed one though.
Mike Broderick? Port player who went to Westies and did OK. Tall defender.
Brother Peter a big strong fella who rucked and played CHF for the Maggies.

10 Greatest Players With White Ankle Supports!

Ken Eustice would be Number 1 for me. Sandy Nelson also rates highly.

Just on the ankle supports, or "spats" as they used to be called, I had very weak ankles as a youngster and had to wear ankle protection. I remember putting those things on and they cut into the skin something fierce, especially over 4 quarters, so I ended up wearing normal socks underneath the spats and it helped a little.

I'm thinking maybe players started wearing them outside the main thicker socks for the same reason, and it ended up becoming a trend. At Norwood, the one I remember most who wore them was a player named George Matic.

What about 1970's v 1980's SA born SANFL players:

80's might look something like this:

FF Naley, Hodges, Hall
HF Aish, Kernahan, McIntosh
C Bradley, A Jarman, Marshall
HB Leslie, G Phillips, B Lindsay
FB Motley, Delaney, Whittlesea

1ST RUCK
Redden
McDermott
Platten

INT McGuinness, Mickan

EMERG G Anderson

Had to count out Tim Evans and Bruce Abernethy (both born in Tasmania), and thought that as Ebert, Blight, Davies, Cornes, Carey played their best footy in the 70's, they would qualify for that team instead.

Who wants to do a 70's team :) Presumably it would include Robran, Davies, Carey, Bagshaw, Ebert, Blight, Marker, Phillis, Nelson, Cunningham

I'll have a lash...

I'll leave CHF free but basically it will be Barrie's position but my first move as coach will be, Barrie where do you want to play and then decide the rest from there....

Bagshaw Phillis Grimwood
Marker Copping
B Stringer Ebert Cunnigham
Taylor Nelson Klomp
Voigt Hammond Woite

Carey Blight Hodgeman

Davies Woodcock

Cornesy was born in Victoria

every Magarey medalist bar Duckworth is in there from the 70s

Apologies to Phillips who could've been in there along with M Williams, Giles, Light and Kinnear from Port, Colosante, Craig, Winter, Staisnowsky, Gallagher and Button from Norwood. Von Bertoch from North, Colbey McInerney and Weston from my lot, Nunan, Whelan, Sims, and Casey from Sturt. Loveday and Beswick from West

Fair era of Footy. Over to the gurus like Hawk, On the Rails, Mark Beswick and McAlamanc who have far greater knowledge of that era than I...

played with dragan tankosic at pooraka. Dragans kickn and pace might of let him down at league level, at Safa level in those days which was still pretty good he was awesome. The man was so strong, great mark and had that presence. we won 3 flags in a row with some excellent players but for me he was the top dog. Great bloke whoas a 18yr old at the time you felt safe as house on the field, he could blew and each time he was reported he got off.

Pretty good summary. He was one of those mechanical looking kicks but a strong player. A great Reserves player for Woodville and played a few good League games too.
