Opposition players who used to carve up your team

Postby FattyLumpkin » Sat Mar 13, 2010 12:45 am

Pretty straight forward - just provide your team, and say a 5 year period where an opposition player would seemingly count the sleeps til he played you.

My team - Woodville. Period '74-79. No idea if these recolections will stand the scrutiny of stats - just an old mans perception!

South - Peter Darley. Not sure when he retired, but certainly in '74 when on 1 leg and weighing close to 130kg, he kicked bags on us. (Closely followed by Wayne Carty for just the 1 game!)
Port - Ebert. Used to get a kick or two. Mind you, so did his opponent John Cummins. But whereas JC's 33 kicks got him nowt, Eberts less touches always got him 3 votes (maybe I just have a chip on my shoulder)
Glenelg - Peter Marker. Never my favourite player, but he always managed a big one against us. Could normally pencil DK in for an easy half dozen + too.
North - Were pretty ordinary in this era & actually no-one stands out - maybe Barry Stringer on the wing.
Torrens - Bloody wimp Greg White always got 100 kicks. Another wingman - who was standing him? Winstanley or Allen???
West - Ray Hayes was just a prick. Reckon Roger Luders circled the Woodville game as soon as the schedule came out.
Sturt - Mick Graham/Ken Whelan - in fact the whole forward line!
Norwood - I reckon Woodcock may have bagged a few against us. Turbill - hated the bugger - but always missed the following week with leather poisoning. 2-8 cleaned a few of us up, but I actually didn't mind him.
Central - Some prick on the half back flank - Johns?? Reckon he'd have 3 or 4 opponents, all who'd bleed from various head wounds at some stage
Umps - Robin Bennett. Used to crucify us.

Norwood wingmen Stephen Richardson and Tim McNeil used to do particularly well against Port in the mid to late 80's. Mark Ducker often kicked a bag against us as well.

Kidney from the Bays tended to play better against Port than he did against some of the other clubs.

Also..

Ian Dettman and John Klug for Woodville.

Darren Harris from South.

Trevor Roe from the Dogs always used to perform against us, I don't recall anyone ever quelling Michael Aish's influence like this bloke did.

Both the Jarman boys in the 80's used to hurt us pretty badly, as did quite a few at Glenelg at the time - Apart from their bigger names, blokes like Seebohm, Garton and Gibbs would bob up and hurt us regularly.

Scott Field from Sturt always played particularly well against us, as did Darren Smith, Stephen Williams, Andrew Obst, David Hynes and Scott Hodges (in the earlier days, we managed to keep him pretty well held toward the end of his career with one costly glaring exception) from Port and I still have nightmares about their backline that at different times included Phillips, Abernathy, Delaney, Fiacci and Northeast.

Actually don't recall him hurting us too much and can't remember now, did he return to SANFL footy after his VFL/AFL career was over? (if so, then he probably makes the list lol)

Yeah fair enough, he would have played in Port's premiership in 88, left to go to Brisbane in 89 but didn't return to play after his AFL days. He formed the pretty handy half back line with Phillips and Abernerthy, and after he left in 89, Northeast replaced him on the flank.

Actually, Norwood hurt Martin Leslie, or more to the point, Greg Turbill did. Result: Martin Leslie broken jaw.

As a bays man, Stephen Williams used to frequently carve us up. Uncanny how he'd bob up and thread a goal around the 50 metre area...

The old man is a Port fan so used to see a few of their games too- David Payne from Norwood used to play well against the pies, would always be amongst the goals.

If we're allowed to mention umpires, I'm thinking Des Foster.
It's all the SANFL's fault.

It always amuses me that Sturt kicked 26 behinds from 40 scoring shots, squandered a 29 point lead at 3/4 time, and the only person to blame in the eyes of Sturt supporters is Des Foster.

that's a fair comment to an extent, particularly given the kicking of the Sturt half forward line. But you would have to concede surely that, given the timing, placement and nature of the free kick, it was an atrocious decision,
an absolute abomination.

Greg Nicholson always played particularly well against us after crossing to Norwood.
Peter Carey always killed us, he was the one ruckman Dexter Kennedy couldn't get near.
Brian Mulvihill always seemed to kick goals against us.
And Tony Symonds was always a bit smart and slippery for us.

Some interesting names there NN, I reckon Carey used to kill us aswell and Symonds was among a throng of Bay players that normally bobbed up to hurt.

Yeah thinking about it some more my recollection is that half-forward flankers often caused us problems, and I think this might be because for a long time we had pretty slow half-back flankers (guys like Frank Leonard and Darryl Hewitt), so players like Roger Woodcock, Jim Tilbrook, Adrian Rebbeck, Trevor Hill, Michael Graham, and Ralph Sewer seemed especially bothersome.
