Pretty sure that there are some players that won a Magarey medal but were runners up on quite a few occasions as well. I believe Jim Deane was one of those but surely there must be more.
Cue Spelly.....

I believe that John Halbert was runner up 3 times before winning the medal.

Ciccollela and Colville have been in the top three or four numerous times.

Won the Magarey (1961) in a side that finished bottom......A rare event

Peter Darley was runner up to Geof Motley when Darley was red hot favourite in 1964. He tied with Barrie Robrn in 1968, but was suspended for abusive language!!! which cost him a medal.
I don't remember Carey ever being runner up.
Max Murdy from South was runner up 3 times in the 1930s, but of course never won a medal.

I believe Tom Leahy (1913 winner) was runner up 4 (!!) times. Albeit under a different voting system.

Max Murdy Runner Up 3 Times - 1934;1938;1940 - No Medal
Jim Deane Runner Up 3 Times - 1948;1951;1957 - Won Medal in 1953 and awarded 1957 medal retrospectively after losing initially on countback.

Mark Naley was runner up in 81 & 82 before winning in 91.
Brodie Atkinson was runner up in 92 & 94 before winning in 97 and again finishing runner up in 98.
edit: Brodie also won the reserves MM in 91. Umps loved him.

Peter Marker lost the medal twice by 1 vote. IMHO, he should have won a medal.

I was just thinking that technically you could add another runner-up to Jimmy Deane's record. He was third in 1949 behind Ron Phillips and Alan Crabb who tied for the medal. When Crabb - who lost on a countback - was awarded the medal retrospectively that would make Deane the runner up.

Flash graham came 2nd once and also got a 3rd as well IIRC.
Could one of the reasons why Ebert and Robran won six medals when Sturt won six flags in the late 60s and early 70s was that they relatively had fewer players taking votes off them compared to Sturt who had vote getters such as Halbert Shearman, Bagshaw - late 60s and Nunan, Bagshaw, Davies and Graham early 70s when they won 6 flags in 11 seasons????
Hey great players and each deserved to be multi-medalists but did they have an advantage over Sturt players as given they had less competition within their clubs for votes???

The main reason why Robran in particular and Ebert won 6 medals whilst Sturt were winning 6 flags was that they were easily the best players in the competition (and probably ever). North won 2 flags, finished second once, third three times and fourth once in that time and Port were runner up 6 times and finished third three times in that period.

Yes it would make him runner-up to the leaders, but still 3rd in the count. Historically I think we've always regarded 2nd place as the legitimate runner-up.

Hmm am - treading on dangerous ground here!
Might want to look at the players Robran had as team mates between 1967 and 1973. I would rate the likes of Lindner (who was ultimately awarded the 67 medal himself!), Hammond, Von Bertoch, Phillips etc.
