Most goals NOT to have won the club's goalkicking award

I was doing some research last night, looking at Norwood's 1937 season. Ron Brown booted 95 goals for the season and was leading goalkicker but Bruce Schultz also booted 93 goals, a total of 188 betwen them.

It got me wondering if Schultz's 93 goals in 1937 is the highest number of goals kicked by a player in a season and yet not win the club's leading goalkicker that season.

Can anyone raise some high tallies or runners-up at other clubs?

Just for the record, Brown & Schultz booted over 100 goals between them 6 seasons in a row from 1934-39:

1934 - 123: Schultz 66, Brown 57
1935 - 117: Schultz 66, Brown 51
1936 - 111: Brown 64, Schultz 47
1937 - 188: Brown 95, Schultz 93
1938 - 146: Brown 86, Schultz 60
1939 - 159: Schultz 98, Brown 61

And to think. All those goals and didn't play in a Grand Final once!!! :)

That would have to be a record. Did John Halbert kick about 60 goals one year and not win Sturt's goalkicking?

Your comment about not playing in a Grand Final is interesting, especially when you consider that Ken Farmer kicked 100 goals in each of those years and yet never played in a Grand Final in that time either. Farmer had played in North's premierships in 1930 and 1931 and their Grand Final loss in 1932 but never played in another Grand Final despite kicking 100 goals every year from 1930 until 1940 inclusive.

Did Bruce Schultz play in Norwood's 1941 premiership, or was that the year that he did his knee?

Yes, Halbert booted 65 in Sturt's 1966 premiership season, but tipped by Emmy Jones with 73.

And no, Bruce Schultz did not play in norwood's premiership of 1941, he damaged his knee in the 1st 5 minutes of round 13 that season. To think he had 98 goals to the end of round 12, with 7 more games to play plus 2 finals, I just wonder how many goals he would have kicked that season. His tallies in 1941 were: 9, 4, 4, 4, 10, 4, 9, 14, 3, 6, 12, 19, 2.

Safe to say there's nothing better than that. From what I can see anyway, and there will never be anything that surpasses it.

I think Stephen Copping kicked something like 60-70 goals in 1977 when Cornes came 2nd to Evans in the Goal kicking for season.

No doubt having to do something with the war - probably to save print space - behinds were not published as they had been over the last 6-7 years before 1941. However it was mentioned he kicked two behinds that day - both were posters.

Weather must have been bad the week he only kicked 3!
IIRC he did his knee as he kicked his 100th goal in round 13. Any idea what quarter/minute mark of the game he kicked his 2nd goal for the match and 100th for the season?

Bruce Lindner kicked 77 in 1983 when Luders kicked his ton. That's as close as I can get for Westies.

How many goals in total did Tim Evans and Ross Agius get in 1980. I think that Agius kicked 60 goals. Between them they may have beaten Brown and Schultz.

Yeah, and I'm pretty sure Sturt had a couple of players booting goals (Graham, Derrington, Paynter, etc) along side Rick Davies in 1983 as well, I never really thought Schultz and Brown would hold the record between 2 players, I was only interested in high totals for players second in the goalkicking award for a season.

You may well be right, I think Agius would have kicked around the 60 mark becuase he was neck and neck with Roger Woodcock most of the year and Woody booted 62 in 1980. If he got 60, that would have combined to 206 with Evans, pretty good effort.

Definitely the 1st quarter, and I believe it was only 5 minutes into the match. Can you imagine the roller coaster of emotions seeing your champion full forward boot 19 the week before, 2 in 5 minutes, and thend suffering a career ending injury only minutes later? Very similar to the John Coleman story.

In assistance with Schultz's 100 in 1941, Kevin Hardiman booted 71 as well. I wish I'd have seen footy in the 30s and 40s, Farmer, Schultz, Owens, Munro, Morton, and a feast of others all booting plenty of goals. Would have been similar to the Hudson, McKenna, Wade, Jesaulenko days, or the Dunstall, Lockett, Ablett days in the VFL.

That's what I'm after. 77 and not winning your club goalkicking is an amazing effort. Any others we can think of?

Just checked The Pride of The Bay book. In 1977 Cornes won the Goal kicking award with 72 goals, Coppo came 2nd with 71.

Kicked goals from everywhere that year...

Tim Evans - 146
Ross Agius - 60
Milan Faletic - 47
Darrell Cahill - 42
Bomber Clifford - 41
Brian Cunningham - 36
Greg Boyd - 29

These are the best efforts of the last 50 years (and almost certainly since WWII). It does not include Stephen Copping's effort in 1977, as his tally was considerably boosted by those ridiculous 'NFL' goals which are only counted in club records and not in league goalkicking records. The top five all occurred in the high-scoring early 80's.

1983 Bruce Lindner (WA) 77 (Roger Luders 105)
1982 Michael Wright (CD) 76 (Greg Edwards 104)
1985 Stephen Kernahan (Glg) 70 (Stephen Copping 78)
Bob Beecroft (Wood) 68 (Malcolm Blight 126)
Peter Johnston (WT) 66 (John Roberts 84)
1966 John Halbert (St) 65 (Emmy Jones 73)

What did the next best North player kick in 1987 when John Roberts kicked 111? Craig Burton / Darren Jarman would have been close to 40 or 50 each?

Incredible to think that Woodville came bottom and Torrens second bottom with two forwards scoring so many goals.

West's top 7 in 1983 were even better:
Luders 109
Lindner 77
Smith 56
Morris 49
Conlen 48
Grosser 48
R.Winter 33

I think Roger Winter's tally would have won our goalkicking for the last few years.
