which team is the real port ?

Anything to do with the history of the SANFL

History and Tradition which club does it belong to ????

Postby Apachebulldog » Tue Jul 31, 2007 9:32 pm

I would like to pose a ??????????????????????????

You cannot have two football clubs purporting and claiming history and tradition.

As far as i am concerned the 1996 Magpies mutated and became a new club called the POWER and started playing in the AFL in 1997.

Unfortunately, as a consequence another new club was formed known as the ETHELTON MAGPIES and started playing in the SANFL in 1997.

So now all of you knowledgeable footy followers out there, can some genious figure out and tell me to whom the history and tradition prior to 1996 belongs to, or where it has gone ??????

Personally i think the history and tradition of the real Port Adelaide Magpies ended in 1996.

As both of these new footy clubs history really commenced in 1997. please explain ?????

Nope.
Power is the new club, Magpies old.
In 1976 (when I started following the SANFL) there was a
Port Adelaide called the Magpies and wore the B&W prison bar jumper.
The Power did not exist til 1996.
That's my excuse and I'm sticking to it. :-k =;

So there! :P

Ring up Alberton Oval then. They'll give you a good answer, and they'll also explain to you how there was a Port Adelaide playing senior football in the SANFL way before 1964 as well.

Depends which way you look at it to me Port Adelaide Power is the old Port Adelaide started in 1870 and the Port Adelaide Magpies Started in 1997 when the Power entered the AFL.

Yah might have a point there strawb, i think you may be right, spot on they pinched Aberton Oval and took all the history and tradition with them leaving an emty prawn shell at Ethelton.

The PAFC (formed 1870) morphed into the Power in '96 as the could not enter the AFL and continue to be known as the Magpies or wear solely black & white because of Collingwood. Upon their entry, the SANFL decided they couldn't have a competition without a "Port Adelaide" presence and hence the Port Adelaide Magpies Football Club was born. Therefore PAFC Magpies/Power 34 SANFL, 1 AFL premierships. PAMFC 2 SANFL premierships

I'll explain for the umpteenth time.
I too used to think like the last 3 posters, ie PAMFC = New Club, PAFC = Old Club
But its not so.
The official legal documents how that the PAFC changed its name to the PAMFC in 1996 so a new entity could inherit the PAFC name.
So in essence the Port Adelaide Football Club ie Power are an entity created in 1996.
The Port Adelaide Magpies Football Club are an entity that have been around since 1870 BUT they changed their name legally in 1996 from the PAFC to the PAMFC.
It was the only way it could be done.
ie players that had contracts with the PAFC in 1995 still had the same contract in 1996, they didn't need to sign new ones as it was the same business/club/entity they were playing for.
HOWEVER and to prove the point, players who played with the PAFC in 1995 (known as the Magpies) and played for the PAFC in 1996 (known as the Power) DID require new contracts as they were being employed by a completely new business/club/entity.
End of discussion.
