In 1995, Leigh Whicker answered some questions for the Sunday Mail. One of them was "The SANFL is considering introducing a salary cap. Is there a concern over the high number of former AFL players coming to the SANFL?"

So, when did the SANFL introduce the salary cap? Was it the following year, 1996?

I vaguely remember some discussions at the time, so I reckon it couldn't have been until after 1997 at least, maybe 99?

I believe they set up a sub-committee to deal with the salary cap in 1997. Perhaps that committee was set up to formulate policy, etc.

Yep, Adelaide Hawk is on the money.

The SANFL salary cap was tabled in 1997, originally intended to be introduced for the start of the 1998 season and then officially enforced for the 1999 season.

It was originally introduced on a one-year trial basis with the clubs having to keep their player and coaching payments under a $320,000 ceiling.

Thanks, atlanta (and AH and CP), I thought it was an earlier thing (like mid 90s).
