The send-off rule

In an effort to settle an argument between drunkards on the hill:

Is the send-off rule still in effect in the SANFL?

A history of players sent off would also be useful. I know Shane Grimm suffered the ignominy of becoming the first to feel its wrath when playing for Port's reserves back in 1993.

Glad you asked the question Pseudo because I'd been wondering about this also .. One of the criteria was for more than 1 report in separate incidents, and I think someone might have been reported twice recently (maybe in the North v WWTt game) .. If so, Im not sure whether the reports were for multiple incidents?

Djaran Whyman was reported twice, but one of these were trial by video. Incredibly he was found guilty on both counts and given a reprimand each time. If he had been reported for the separate incidents at the time of the incidents he would have been sent from the ground.

Yep, maybe 2000 IIRC.

Macca and Craig Balme also sent off in the 90's

Yes. It happened to the very first bloke who copped it (Shane Grimm, Magpies reserves). Reported twice for two incidents by two seperate umpires, he was sent off at quarter time. Both charges were dismissed at the tribunal.

So the rule is still in place then?

The send off rule must be working as no-one since Sam Jones in 2001 has. He along with Craig Balme, Brett Mancini and Garry McIntosh are the only four to have been sent off at League level, as far as I know.

Can someone be sent off if a player is reported by two umpires for two different charges arising from a sinlge incident?

Eg marking contest, player comes in late with elbow, one umpire reports him for charging (didn't see the elbow as he was behind the player) and another ump in a closer spot reports said player for striking.

There is no send off law in Australian Football, Law 20 deals with the "Order Off" Law....

20. Order Off Law

20.1 Application
This Law 20 applies to all competitions other than the AFL competition.

20.2 Order Off for Remainder of Match
In addition to being reported, a field or emergency field Umpire shall order the Player reported from the Playing Surface for the
remainder of a Match if the Player is reported for any of the following Reportable Offences:
(a) intentionally, recklessly or negligently making contact with or striking an Umpire;
(b) attempting to make contact with or strike an Umpire;
(c) using abusive, insulting, threatening or obscene language towards or in relation to an Umpire;
(d) behaving in an abusive, insulting, threatening or obscene manner towards or in relation to an Umpire;
(e) intentionally, recklessly or negligently kicking another person;
(f) an act of misconduct if the Umpire is of the opinion that the act constituting misconduct is serious in nature.

A Controlling Body may specify other Reportable Offences or conduct
for which a Player may be ordered from the Playing Surface for the
remainder of the Match.

20.3 Other Reportable Offences
A Player reported on a second occasion by an Umpire for the same or any other Reportable Offence other than those listed in Law 20.2, shall, in addition to being reported, be ordered from the Playing Surface for the remainder of the Match.

There are another 4 points to Law 20 which deal with the administration of the Order Off law, how to be signaled, replacement of players and what to do if a team is reduced to below the legal number of players for a "match".

In answer to your specific question Squawk, if one of the umpires feel Law 20.2 (f) is breeched , then yes a player can be sent off for two seperate reportable offences if one umpire thinks it a serious breach of misconduct.

He was my captain of South Whyalla Under 11s in 1981 (undefeated premiers might I add ) and he was sent off many times even then, mostly for abusing umpires.

George Fiacchi was reported twice in either the '95 or '96 GF.

But didn't get sent off.
