Bearded Wonders

Postby McAlmanac » Wed Oct 27, 2010 9:36 pm

Back in the 70's, beards were all the rage, so what would a composite team of bearded players look like? I thought I'd give it a crack. In the fashion of State sides of the era, there might be a couple of blokes out of position:

F: G.Dietrich (NA) T.Evans (PA) I.Wallace(WT)
HF: S.Knight (PA) R.Gerlach (PA) G.Linke (SA)
C: S.Butler (SA) G.McIntosh (N) R.Hateley (SA)
HB: R.Klomp (S) L.Robson (WT) G.Dunstan (N)
B: R.Wildy (WT) S.Palmer (SA) B.Tyrell (W)
1R: J.Fehring (N) M.Faletic (WT,PA) D.Rady (G)
Int: G.Wiseman (S) G.Blethyn (PA)
Coach: J.Halbert (G,S)

Captaincy goes to Ian Wallace - the greatest footy beard of all, even better than Daryl Rady's!

Any suggestions on who could force their way into this team of hirsute heroes?

Did Bomber Clifford have a beard at one stage? Also did Dirk Inglis?

I originally had Dirk at CHF but I could only recall a moustache on reflection. Don't think Bomber had one, only maybe for 5 minutes.

Adrian Hunt - known as 'The Bear' played for Torrens at the same time as Ian Wallace.

Also Wayne Schmaal, David Young and Phil Carman had a beard when he played for Norwood as did Chris 'The Tractor' Prime.
I'm reading a book about anti-gravity. I can't put it down.

Bob Wildy played for Torrens in the mid to late 1960s, mainly as a back pocket. He was a member of the Torrens team that made the charge to the finals in 1969, winning their last 11 minor round games.

Thanks rig, I remember their charge (it was the last 10 games actually) but didn't recall him. I remember the drawn first semi well though.

I was in the same class at primary school as Bob's older brother John, along with a guy named Russell Virgo.
I seem to remember being a Torrens supporter was compulsory at that school.
[John was more into cricket and Mathematics particularly when we were at secondary school together.]

I went to the same school as you then Psyber, albeit quite a few years after you. You are absolutely right. Even though Prospect Oval was probably as close to the school as Thebby, I was the only North barracker, in fact the only non Torrens barracker in my class.

Too many moustaches to choose from!

As for Trevor Pierson and Stephen Curtis - I went for blokes who predominantly sported a beard. Piero's was always just a week or so's growth. :)
