Not sure if this has been done before, and obviously it will be hypothetical .. But on the back of the almost universally acclaimed performance of Rick Davies in the 76' Grand Final - Are there any other performances in Grand Finals that would have been clear cut when awarding the Jack Oatey medal, had they been around in the day?

Geof Motley probably 1957 and 1965. Both would have been interesting. In 1957, he was beaten by Peter Koerner in the centre, was moved to half forward and kicked seven goals. Given how the judges seem to valued goalkickers (e.g. Darel Hart in 1991 - 7 goals from 11 kicks) he would have probably got the medal. Up until the last 15 minutes of 1965 there would have been no doubt. He absolutely dominated from the half back flank whilst keeping his opponent John Tilbrook to one kick. But then Tilbrook played a major part in Sturt storming home.
David Kantilla would definitely have won 1964 and Trevor Obst probably would have won in 1963
Darcy Cox (North Adelaide) was considered best on ground in 1949.
I agree with all of Adelaide Hawk's comments.
Carey was very impressive in 1973 but most of the media thought Bob Hammond with Bob Tregenza best Glenelg player.
Unlike the VFL/AFL a player from the losing side has never wo the medal but I am inclined to think Hammond would have won in 1973.

I think possibly Paul Bagshaw was a clear choice for best on ground in 1968.

I just had a look at some of my records from 1980 and the consensus was that Michael Taylor, in a losing side, was best man on the ground.

Yes, he probably was, but I still have nightmares of the number of times we kicked the ball straight to Greg Phillips that day. We couldn't seem to get the ball past him. Kingo's game was a big one, I always remember one kick from the middle that nearly scored. But, Kingo was the best player in the compertition in 1980. He should have won the Magarey Medal and didn't, so I'm just following tradition

Couldn't agree more. Absolutely dominant. As I said before Darel Hart did kick seven goals but he only had 11 kicks. Perkins game was brilliant. David Sanders wasn't too bad on his wing, either.

CP raised the topic of clear-cut retrospective medals and I don't think there was one in 1973. I would just give Carey the nod over Hammond, but if North had held on, I reckon Hammond would've won it. Anyway, if ever there were two GF performances worthy of a Jack Oatey Medal in the same game, that was it - a medal for both of them!

Not that it matters, but I have heard Murray Ducker interviewed as to how he would have given Magarey Medal votes if there were such a thing for the 1973 GF and he said : Hammond 3, Tregenza 2, Carey 1.
The amazing thing is that Rex Voight kicked 7 goals, I think, and yet doesn't seem to rate a mention.

Wasn't Neil Kerley regarded best on ground in the 1961 Turkish Bath GF for blanketing Bill Wedding in the ruck? Never saw the game so I can't say.

I remember listening to the game. I wasn't allowed to go because it was too hot. Kerley had something like 23 kicks 6 marks and 3 handballs (see link below) as a first ruckman. Yes he was best on the ground. Not a bad effort for a bloke who would have just been a "Collingwood six footer" to beat Big Bill Wedding.

According to the match report on fullpointsfooty, Voigt was only rated 4th best for Glenelg after Carey, Kerry Hamilton and Tregenza.

No what I meant was the contradictory terms - possibly and clear.
I personally have no problem with Paul Bagshaw being voted best on ground in ANY game I saw him play in (except when Barrie Robran was playing of course).

I don't understand what you're on about. As a kid, I seem to recall people saying Bagshaw was best on ground after the 1968 GF, but I don't have great recall of the entire match, so .... in my mind ..... possibly Bagshaw was a clear B.O.G.
