1 Russell Ebert
2 Michael Aish
3 John Platten
4 Greg Phillips
5 Andrew Jarman
6 Gary McIntosh
7 Rick Davies
8 Darren Jarman
9 Craig Bradley

Should we be basing this purely on SANFL performances, or performances elsewhere for those that graduated from the SANFL?

1 Barrie Robran
Daylight
Russell Ebert
Daylight
Lindsay Head
John Cahill
Paul Bagshaw
Stephen Kernahan
Andrew Jarman
Darren Jarman
Malcolm Blight
Rick Davies
A couple of caveats. This is purely on SANFL form, I guve no regard to VFL/AFL performances for this exercise. e.g. I thought that Andrew was better than Darren Jarman in the SANFL, but not necessarily overall. Blight and Kernahan would both be higher if VFL/AFL were taken into account. Cornes, Carey, Eustice, D Lindner and Shearman are all very unlucky not to make the top 10 (and I have probably forgotten a couple of others).

OK, best players Ive seen in the SANFL:
1. Platten
2. Kernahan
3. Bradley
4. Hodges
5. McIntosh
6. A Jarman
7. D Jarman
8. P Motley
9. A. Obst
10. McGuiness
A lot of players I could have snuck in there, Delaney, Aish, N Roberts, Whittlesea, McAdam etc.
Unfortunately I missed seeing Robran, and only saw Ebert, Davies, Taylor etc after their best years.
Post SA-AFL I think probably Squire and Clayton are the most skillful players Ive seen.

IMO, although a wonderful player, I think Peter Motley is consistently well over-rated in these topics on SANFL players.
Going back, I think Ken Eustice and Neil Kerley could be considered. Eustice on ability and Kerley on value and effect.

You probably need to factor in the differing era's people saw ... IMHO Peter Motley was an outstanding talent and even though he may have only played 4 years (or thereabouts) in the SANFL, his ability ranks among the best I've seen.
The 80's was such A Golden era in terms of the quality of young players that came through, so glad I got to witness it.

I only saw Peter Motley in 3 or 4 games and am basing my judgement on that. He was like people described Robran to me in those games.
The title of the topic after all is "Top 10 that you've seen in the SANFL" so I don't know how anyone could say anyone else's choice is under or over rated in "these topics" unless they've only gone to the exact same games that person has sitting in exactly the same place that person has.
And how I'd consider players I've never seen in a topic detailing the best I've seen I have no idea.
If the topic was just purely the best 10 SANFL players I'd have quite a different list as I'd take a lot of what I've read and what other people have told me over the years into account and also take into context that what I've seen is only a very very small part of the SANFL.
That's what makes this topic so interesting in that everyone has seen different games over different periods and hence why it would be very unlikely 2 people would have the same response.

JK's hit the nail on the head completely here, R&B. Kerley and Eustice may well have been better, but I never saw them. I saw Motley from the beginning and he was one of the best I saw from the start.
We were really lucky to see the 80's, as much as you, R&B, were so lucky to see some of the stars of the late 60's and through the 70's

I don't have a problem with any of that.
Like everyone, I was also just giving an opinion based on what I'd seen. I didn't say Eustice and Kerley were better, just that they could be considered and that in my opinion Peter Motley was too high in these lists.
Not sure there's much wrong in saying that?
