Well, it has taken a long time and considerable effort. Have finally managed to find a copy of the "Big Replay" that aired the evening of this classic game. Contains around 15 minutes of the third quarter and all of the last. Great to see this game again after so long. The downside is there are no interviews, we don't get to see Granger leaving the field with a police escort after the game, the 2nd quarter Granger/Cornes clash, Port's wierd "bumping" warm-up routine just prior to the start of play in the second half and there are no interviews with coaches or players. I am sure the whole lot is still sitting in the archives at Channel 10 (they used to be ADS7). Anyone know someone who might be able to get access?

The Cornes/Granger incident:



Must give full credit to the team at Safootballarchive - the work being done there is nothing short ot outstanding. The enormous hours spent in sourcing all of this rare material, which may otherwise have been lost to SANFL fans altogether, is really paying off. I've had a look at a number of clips that I hadn't seen since the original game was played - the Darren Harris goal after the siren against Port in 1984 to win for South, I remembered watching that game live and wish I'd seen it since - and it's been fantastic - well done to all involved.

Bruce mentions Port were minor premiers. He also mentions the week prior was Port first loss in a final since 1978. Know it would have been talked about here before, their next win must have been the 2nd semi in 1988?
I was 5 at the time so didn't know much about it, but in the years since I always thought Norwood pretty much dominated that year.
Presumably Norwood played Sturt in the QF?
Spelly or someone, what were the final five ladder standings, the crucial games that may have separated Port and Norwood, and the details of the QF and 2nd semi's

In the 1982 preliminary final Port were trailing by 26 points in the second quarter against Glenelg. Port coach John Cahill sent Granger onto the field in the 21st minute of the quarter whereupon Granger was reported by a goal umpire after he King hit Graham Cornes knocking him down as soon as they matched up. Cornes recovered quickly and was awarded a free kick. Cornes was later to blatantly push Granger in the back but the umpire refused to award a free kick. In the third quarter Glenelg back pocket Stephen Barratt had his right leg broken in a "collision" with Granger and Peter Maynard received a bleeding eardrum. Although credited with only one kick and two marks, Granger reportedly had an "eerie" effect on the game with not only Glenelg players hesitant to match him for fear of missing the final but considerable abuse from the crowd.

Port eventually lost the match by 1 point. As Cahill walked down the stairs of the members' stand he was jeered by the Glenelg supporters in the crowd of 32,339 and Granger had to be escorted from the oval by police. Granger was subsequently suspended for 10 weeks which ended his own career. Granger later claimed that he was sent out to hit Cornes, Cahill however claimed there was no such order and with his career over, Granger felt betrayed by the lack of an admission by Cahill. Cornes for his part has never accepted any apology for the incident, still remembers it bitterly and feels there was no doubt Granger was sent out to target him by the coaching staff.

Has to be one of the highest scoring seasons.

Got an old Football World at home from mid-season that predicts a Port v Sturt grand final.

Norwood won nine of their last ten minor round games, smashing Port by 112 points at The Parade in round 21. Port's biggest loss at the time. Sturt would belt Port by 114 points the following year.

Sturt and West slumped late in the season. Central won their last seven games, belting Glenelg by a cricket score in the last minor round match to sneak into the five.

Off the top of my head, the final ladder was something like this...

Norwood fell out of the 5 at around the halfway mark of the season (after losing to South at Adelaide Oval IIRC) .. We then won something like 9 of our last 10 to finish 2nd at the end of the Minor Round - Only some incredible goals from Paul Weston prevented it being 10/10.

You could definitely sense a potent group coming together at The Parade, however we were perhaps a bit fortunate to get through the Quali with the win after Sturt missed numerous chances in front of goal - IIRC they really could have buried us in that encounter.

They then copped a pasting from the Bays in the 1st Semi, almost displaying a hangover from a Quali they no doubt would have felt was "the one that got away"/

The 2nd Semi was a cracker against Port and my most sought after game should the vision ever be made available ... The game had everything, and after Port had stormed home from a deficit (around 3 goals) at 3/4 time the Legs looked cooked. A Rick Neagle goal from near the boundary line somehow got them back up and running and they they ran over the top of Port.

Hopefully Adelaide Hawk can pop in here to clarify (or change where necessary) these version of events.

Spot on the money, The score from the QF was Norwood 11-17, Sturt 10-15. Both teams kicked poorly that day. After that South loss, I was very concerned about our form, and had a chat with Balmey who assured me that things would turn around the following week against West. He called it.

Do you know anyone that had a good view of Tim Evans' "goal that wasn't" in the 2nd Semi as to whether he actually kicked it?

I was back at the club after the game, and most people couldn't believe how Evans could have missed that goal. In the replay, they had a shot of it behind the goal, and it did look as though it had actually missed, but it was hard to tell. Either way, if Evans had just poked it through rather than trying to kick it out of the stadium, there would have been no doubts.

I was sitting right behind the middle of the goals that day, and it looked to me, for all the world, that he kicked it fair and square. Even Norwood fans among us agreed it looked okay where we sat.
