Can anyone assist with the Qld 20 that played SA in the State Game at Footy Pk on May 19
I have every other state side complete For SA and thier opponents from 1879 - 1982 with the one exception of the VFA side on July 23, 1957 where Bob Withers was a late out with the flu and I dont know whon replaced him.

I have the SA 20 and 9 of the QLD Side

Anyone who has a budget where they wrote the ins/outs or has a VHS copy of the game I would be interested to hear from
The 9 Queenslanders in an unplaced side I have confirmed are:

Bruce Good
Peter Taylor
Frank Gumbleton
Trevor Sutton
Murray Dickson
Gary Maddison (Ex NFC)
Barry Karklis
G..... Frank
Garry Paxton

Was the Qld v SA game a "curtain raiser" to the SA v WA game, with the early game a team of lower standard SA players? One year I recall SA kicked about 30 goals against Qld, not sure if that was 1980, or perhaps another year when we played up in Qld.

Long time ago, difficult to remember, especially as was only 8 years old that year, I do remember being at the SA v WA game that year though. Bit of a brawl happened I recall.

No the Qld game was a stand alone game. Ralph Sewer certainly was involved in a brawl in that game. Trevor Hill played an outstanding game. The Advertiser gave best palyers as Trevor Hill plus 19 others for SA.

Ralph Sewer's famous brawl for SA was against the VFA in 1980 not QLD.

Your best bet Mark would be to go to the State Library and look at the Advertiser that came out on the day of the match - hopefully their preview article would have named a QLD team that was approximately close to the truth! I went to the game - I think QLD came in as the Adel Cup opponent as the SANFL & VFL couldn't agree to terms for the usual Adel Cup game & QLD had belted TAS by 8 goals earlier that year. I remember getting really frustrated with the SA players - I wanted to see them kick 40+ goals but their goalshooting was terrible and they finished with a pathetic 30.39...

I thought someone (maybe me) talked about having the budget from that game. There was a topic/few comments on this game previously but I'm not sure if the entire team was identified.

Cheers RD - Will try the messengers, News, Advertiser -
I have the Footy Budget for the game but the person I inherited it from never crossed out the names of those who dropped out.
I'm also trying a friend at the ABC to see if they still have the game on film
I'm also trying to get hold of a historian (on holiday I think) who has helped with Qld stats before - Maybe the QAFL has an annual report and balance sheets that has the team. The SANFL for 1980 named our side but not the Qld side which is fair enough.

Still got a few options but they are dwindling. :)

RD is correct. In fact this one is straight from the "RD Archives".

1980 South Australia 19.21135 d Victorian Football Association 15.15.105. The brawl starts at 19.20

Fair bit of talent on show in these highlights - and not just the players...

A little surprising that SA only defeated the VFA by 5 goals.

You weren't a fan of Des Foster or Maurie Stabb (VFL) then? Anyway back to the topic - Ch 9 had the SANFL rights in 1980 so we would have to raid the Ch 9 archives to get footage of the SA/QLD blockbuster to get Mark's mystery solved!

Correct. I would love to have access to The ch 9 and ch 10 archives. Can anyone assist with that? Would be prepared to throw some $$$ at it too.

Was there a fire at one of the tv stations that wiped out a significant portion of old SANFL footage?

Tried the "News", Brisbane Courier, Sunday Mail, Advertiser, SANFL Annual Report, Football Times and no luck with the 1980 Qld final selected team.
Have nailed 9 starters though.

Turns out the game was televised on Channels 9 and 2 - Hope that they have this game archived1

Waiting for AFLQLD to check their annual report

I might have to resort to phoning past players in Qld and invade privacy :)

Only 1992-1997 left to input data to have all state sides for SA and their opponents done from 1879 to present day. All WAFL State Sides complete.
Thanks for those posters who gave some hints above - Maybe someone who went to the game crossed out players on their footy budget who did not play?
