Full Point Footy web site

Email I got from John Devaney of Full Point Footy

As any of you who have visited Full Points Footy in the past four months or so will be only too aware all progress on the website has ceased. The good news is that this is not a permanent state of affairs. However, I shall not be personally involved in any future developments as ownership of the website has, as of today, changed hands. You can expect to be contacted by the new owner in due course and given the option of continuing or revoking your subscription.

This then is my final email as founder, editor, principal writer and chief cook and bottle washer of what I have, at various different times, viewed as a great adventure, a lover, a hobby, a pile of rubbish and a right pain in the arse. I began the site in 2001 because of a deep love of footy and a feeling of immense frustration at the way in which its history was being depicted - or should that be distorted? I certainly did not harbour any belief that I could, single-handedly, do anything to reverse a trend that had been gathering momentum for decades, but I did at least hope that my work would arouse a modicum of interest and, dare I say it, respect. Unfortunately, the world wide web is vast, and individual websites are, in the main, well nigh invisible. This was forcibly brought home to me when I took the gamble of publishing a series of books about the history of the game in the hope that they would at least be considered worth arguing with by those who have seen fit to concoct the "official" version of that history. However, the books disappeared without trace, generating virtually no response whatsoever - no reviews, no comments, and, it goes without saying, scarcely any sales. Perhaps even more crucially, the history of our game continues, in my view, to be distorted and mangled beyond credibility, to the extent that I sometimes wonder whether the game I fell in love with almost half a century ago (and continue to love) is the same as the one currently "marketed" by the AFL.

Still, I am aware that your time is valuable, and I am sure that you have better things to do with that time than than read my somewhat pathetic laments and grumbles. It would, however, be remiss of me if, before closing, I did not take the opportunity to express my deep and heartfelt thanks to everyone who has helped in any way with the genesis, evolution and development of Full Points Footy. As I indicated at the outset, the website is set to continue, hopefully for many years, and I have every confidence that the new owner's efforts in furthering its evolution will be much more successful than mine have been. Please give him your support if you can, and may I wish you all the very best in your ongoing football pilgrimage.

Best regards,

John Devaney fullpointsfooty

Thanks for all your hard work in producing a fantastic web site, John.

Good luck in the future

Yeah - I got this too.

Looks like Bruce MacAvaney might be the new owner?

Thanks to John for all his hard work and effort - pretty damn good considering he's an englishman who still lives in England!

Not happy. The site has been taken down while the new owner constructs a new one. I would have thought that the old one could stay up whilst they construct the new one?

This is an email I received from the new owners of Fullpointsfooty.

In affectionate remembrance of the Full Points Footy website,
which died sometime in the depth of a harsh English winter.
Deeply lamented by a large circle of sorrowing friends and
acquaintances, R.I.P.

The body will be cremated and the ashes taken to Australia.

Dear Full Points Footy Subscriber,

The late lamented Full Point Footy website (FPF) may no longer be
with us, but its spirit (and the vast bulk of its content) will
live on in a new and expanded website to be launched in early
April. Named [http://australianfootball.com] (subtitle
'Celebrating the history of the great Australian game'), the new
site is an ambitious attempt to create a comprehensive online
home for the game's glorious history, culture—and stats.

Building on work done over many years by John Devaney at FPF,
[http://australianfootball.com] will publish a wide range of
footy-related content, from previously published newspaper and
magazine pieces (which we have permission to reproduce), to
specially-commissioned articles on key topics, to lists, stats,
and indeed anything else which falls under the rubric of
'Australian football'. It will also tap into the rich vein of
knowledge possessed by footy fans across the country (and the
world) by creating a community of interest and providing them
with a platform to write, share research, comment or otherwise
contribute to the corpus of footy knowledge.

The themes informing the direction of australianfootball.com
[http://www.australianfootball.com] are threefold:

the Australian game of football is just that, Australian, and as
such needs to be understood through the lens of all the states
and communities that play the game; the game was created and
codified in the late 1850s (notwithstanding possible antecedents
), and that due recognition be given to the early history of
football and the pioneers who developed it, and the game, and
its history, should not belong to any particular group or
organization—it's the people's game and should remain so.

For those wishing to express their interest in the forthcoming
site you are cordially invited to click on the link below (or
navigate directly to [http://www.australianfootball.com]) and
input your email address in the space provided.

In so doing you'll be placing yourself on the new site's mailing
list and in due course will be invited to become a member of the
australianfootball.com [http://www.australianfootball.com]
community. I appreciate your time and look forward to your
support.

Greetings folks,

I am the new owner of the Full Points Footy website, which is being rebranded as 'australianfootball.com' (AF). Apologies for taking the old site down (certain issues to do with the new development have necessitated that), but the new site (which includes most of the old FPF content) should be up and running by the first week of April. Those who sign up for AF will be notifed of all developments.

Those of you who are familar with FPF will know it provided great coverage of South Australian football history, and that will certainly continue with AF. Indeed, we hope to incorporate much more information, including new and republished articles, old newspaper reports, and stats. As the new site will be incorporating all the significant stats of the VFL/AFL since 1897 (every game ever played, every player, every goal, etc), I take the view that if we have it for the VFL we should have it also for the SANFL and WAFL. In that context we'll be approaching both leagues for access to official historical stats (such as games played, goalkickers, ladders, etc) but hope to include a lot more such as club honour boards, HOF's, etc etc. I'd certainly be appreciative of any leads in that search. I should add that AF will be providing a platform for members to contribute their own content to the site (fully attributed and acknowledged) in a bid to make the site as comprehensive a resource on footy history as there is on the net.

Cheers

Adam

Wonder if they were able to get in contact with Spelly and see if he could help out? Since he doesn't post here anymore, it would be a pity if all his info was lost.

I've already sent across Quarter by Quarter scores for all WAFL matches from 1898-2012, would be awesome to have as much SANFL info as possible on there.

We are indeed up and running, and i'd encourage all interested parties here to take a look - and sign up. Bear in mind of course that it is billed as australianfootball.com 1.0 and as such there's still a lot of gaps. About 70% of the 'Full Points Footy' content is up, although some of his best material, such as 'interstate footy' is still to come.

SA visitors will notice that the SANFL stats component of the site is sadly deficient - at this stage we just don't have access to the depth of confirmed data that we can access for the V/AFL. We have displayed SANFL match results (and ladders) for the period 1907-50 (some mistakes there that we are trying to iron out now) and 2012 as well, but what we are really aiming for is the complete 1877-2012 record. That includes players, games, and goals.

It's rather sad to proclaim the site as national in scope and then see our database showing Graham Cornes as having played 5 games of football. The best we can do for now is to fill in the games for the leading players on a one by one basis where the games/goals are known, and try to source the complete player database going forward.

I am aware of the work of 'Spelly' and will get in touch with him as to whether he has the type of data we're looking for.

Good luck with the site

I notice the involvement of Slattery Media (no longer AFL publisher and this has been formally confirmed by the AFL)

Slattery Media no longer works with the AFL or owns any portion of the website. It is the Editors own investment. Adam added that Slattery developed the site for him and given tremendous moral support

I'm satisfaied anyone who helps australianfootball.com are not being used by the AFL or Slattery Media for information
