I'm pretty sure it was during Fos Williams' tenure as coach. If I recall, they also reverted back to the red sash after he left.

Williams coached Westies from 1974-78, followed by Hughes in 1979-80. I know they must have gone back to the Bloods at the start or during Neil Kerley's stint from 1981-84. So we're on the money, I think.

You're right there, but the question is, did they change from the Bloods to Wolves (as well as their guernsey design) at the start of Williams' tenure, or further into it?

I believe a similar thing happened at Norwood in 1959, when Alan Killigrew took over. He changed their nickname from the Redlegs to the Demons, as well as putting a red yoke on the guernsey, a la Melbourne in the VFL. When Haydn Bunton took over in 1965, I believe they reverted back.

Yes, Norwood definitely became the Demons in 1959 and reverted to the Redlegs under Bunton in 1965. They had remained the Demons under Doug Olds. They dropped the red yoke at that time but did have a small red NFC insignia on their chest until 1968 when they reverted to their traditional plain uniform.

When did Westies drop the 'n'tars from their nickname. I note that they still sing "We are the mighty Blood'n'tars" which is what I knew them as in the 1960s. Other than the song, I haven't heard it referred to in about 40 years.

I think we have done this before and I am pretty sure you'll find they were only the Wolves in 1980. As I recall they became the Bloods under Fos Williams at the time they changed to the striped guernsey in 1974. I think they changed back to the Bloods and the sash guernsey when Neil Kerley took over from Trevor Hughes in 1981.
Mark Beswick can you confirm?

I didn't realise they were only the wolves for such a short time, but looking back it does seem about right.

Re Woodville, and I know this has been discussed on here a few times as well, was that change to "Warriors" around 1983?

Re Norwood, I dont mind their guernsies of recent years (although I think a few other color schemes are better although I probably am a little biased), but personally I would say the red and blue combination with the "V" up the top (Melbourne Football Club style) is my least favourite traditional style guernsey. And by using the word "traditional", Im differentiating between older style guernsies, and the ones in recent years where clubs, particularly AFL clubs have brought in so many new color combinations, some of which -including Port's - have been fairly ordinary.

Personally I quite liked the Central guernsey from the 1980's, as well as the Glenelg guernsey from that era, although again being biased my favourite looking guernsey is the Port Adelaide "prison bars" type.

Re North, I prefer their 1980's stripes guernsey to the V style. I also have no idea why they changed the style of rooster, I'm not a fan of it at all. Just as I wasn't a fan of some of some of the changes Norwood brought in (guernsey, and the Redleg man) when David Wark became involved there a few years back.

My Old Man had his old Club 'Kit Bag' from the '60s @ West Adelaide.
I recall it having the 'Sturt Desert Pea' (Red n Black) Insignia on it, with the words Blood 'n' Tars.

Anyone else seen one of these?
Is this why they became the Wolves?
I recall that the 'animal' symbol changed also @ some point, looked like a dog with a paw on a footy.
Was this before or after the Fos Williams Era?

I attended Richmond for the first time in 30 years on Saturday and was very disappointed.
Poor oval condition, poor facilities, poor management of the oval, poor oval set up, poor grandstand, poor cliental for a Sat night.
I have been to several others recently for non AFL sponsored programs and Westies seem to be living in the past?
Certainly has not encouraged me to go back. :(

The bloodhound was from before Fos' coaching stint. It dates back to the 1961 premiership. Dan Russell of the Sunday Mail used to draw a poster of the winning premier similar to the famous Weg Posters. I had the 1960 poster of the rooster on top of a Demon. In 1961 when West won he had the problem of how do you draw blood'n'tar. So he drew the bloodhound on top of a demon. I think the bloodhound had a barrel around its neck with tar written on the barrel. This poster used to be displayed in the Westonians room at Richmond.

As above badge confirms, were Wolves in 81. Changed back to Bloods in 82, a year after dumping stripes for sash. (source: Football Times Year Books).

Can also confirm West were still Bloods in 78 (referred to as such in 1977 publication "League Football in South Australia" and in the 1978 Grand Final Football Budget)

Hence they were Wolves from 1979-81 (again, source Football Times Year Books)

Trevor Grimwood's Jacket in his Magary Medal photo had The Bloods on it.
