still legal under the rules I think but if you could set one up an slot it in the time frame of modern footy then good luck....

I've always considered this myself but would be harder these days with the time limit placed upon the kicker and they can't place it on the mark, have to place it a fair way back. Don't think they'd have time to get a Tee out or build a sand caste either.

Last person I knew who did a drop kick on purpose was Ross Gibbs in the last quarter of the 85 Grand Final.

I believe the last place kick was Mick Clingly for West Torrens.....
Something about a race horse which came in at long odds
"if it wins I will kick 12 goals and the last one will be a place kick..." I'm not sure of the season - but I suspect it was the mid 1950s.
I have also heard of Sturt player George Tilley who used to use it.

IIRC, Greg Phillips kicked a goal with a droppie against Glenelg at Footy Park in '87.

Mind you, he was directly in front and only ten metres out at most.

Phillips also kicked a goal against Sturt at Adelaide Oval from close range using a drop kick.

May have been early 90's.

In 1977 South Aust played West Aust in a state game at Football Pk to celebrate 100 years of South Aust footy. As part of the pre match entertainment 2 teams of past players from the 1950s & 60s wore old time guernseys and caps and played a comedic muck around old style game. I remember John Halbert taking a mark in front of goals and took ages preparing the ground for a place kick - which he then truly converted into a goal.

Shape of the modern footy makes the place kick a lower percentage kick.

Those ballooned rugby and league balls have a much bigger sweet spot to connect with.

Aussie rules balls are virtually flat in comparison...
