used in the olden days but like the dropkick was fazed out way before my time, watching the rugby and the accuracy of their place kickers would any aussie rules club ever consider training their players to utilise it?

Could still be done in the final quarter of a grand final when one team has an unassailable lead and begins to lairise...

I've always considered this myself but would be harder these days with the time limit placed upon the kicker and they can't place it on the mark, have to place it a fair way back. Don't think they'd have time to get a Tee out or build a sand caste either.

A tee? Meh. A
real footballer should use his own mouthguard!

Last person I knew who did a drop kick on purpose was Ross Gibbs in the last quarter of the 85 Grand Final.

I believe the last place kick was Mick Clingly for West Torrens.....
Something about a race horse which came in at long odds
"if it wins I will kick 12 goals and the last one will be a place kick..." I'm not sure of the season - but I suspect it was the mid 1950s.
I have also heard of Sturt player George Tilley who used to use it.

this was not a thread about the place kick from years ago, i asked if it might ever be reintroduced based on the accuracy of rugby players using it, why is it kicked to the history forum ffs?

Because if things don't go our way re the AFL Reserves, it will be along with the SANFL consigned to history forever!

IIRC, Greg Phillips kicked a goal with a droppie against Glenelg at Footy Park in '87.
Mind you, he was directly in front and only ten metres out at most.
CHF experiment didn't last long...

Phillips also kicked a goal against Sturt at Adelaide Oval from close range using a drop kick.
May have been early 90's.

If I remember correctly, he missed one from right in front trying to do a drop kick?

It's mentioned in
Best of both Worlds. Think it was '57 or '58.

In 1977 South Aust played West Aust in a state game at Football Pk to celebrate 100 years of South Aust footy. As part of the pre match entertainment 2 teams of past players from the 1950s & 60s wore old time guernseys and caps and played a comedic muck around old style game. I remember John Halbert taking a mark in front of goals and took ages preparing the ground for a place kick - which he then truly converted into a goal.

Watching the accuracy of Halfpenny from the British Lions last night makes me think it could work

Shape of the modern footy makes the place kick a lower percentage kick.
Those ballooned rugby and league balls have a much bigger sweet spot to connect with.
Aussie rules balls are virtually flat in comparison...
