Re: The word champion is used too often these days
A defining moment in my life. it's fair to say many of my beliefs, values and behaviours over the last 44 years originate from the moment I comprehended the outcome of that game....
But not to the point that I can appreciate the icon of Australian Sport that is Russell Ebert

Lovely to see. I’ve only caught snippets of the recent interviews Cornesy had with both Robran and Ebert, but must go back and listen properly.
A legend indeed.
Great photo in the man cave Booney!

'77 mate, ended a 12 year drought, Ebert said "It's been a bloody long wait, but Jeez it was worth it!"

It's an incredibly sad day.
I can't help getting emotional about this knowing how much my dad and Grandfather loved and adored him.
Was awful seeing how much he had deteriorated.

An absolute champion on the field, and an even bigger champion off the field. This is a hard one to take

Genuinely sad about this, probably the best footballer I’ve ever seen. Fantastic person and magnificent ambassador for the SANFL
Hated Port but could never hate him.
A football god.
Rest In Peace Russell.

RIP
Growing up, Russell Ebert and David Hookes were my 2 idols.
Both are gone but not forgotten.
Sitting out under the pergola enjoying the weather and having a beer for Russ.

RIP Champion.
Was lucky enough to work alongside him on several projects between 2000 - 2010.
As a mad Sturt fan I was hard wired and conditioned not to like him, having met him... I couldn't do it.
Great man, great family, a great loss.

Russell Ebert epitomised best and fairest, he was the best and fairest in a defining era of football, an era when South Australia football was at its very best. A soft spoken man who let his actions do the talking.
My condolences to his family who would have gone through the wringer in the last couple of weeks.

Re: The word champion is used too often these days
What a sad day it is, not just for the footy world, but having had the privilege of meeting and chatting with him several times through a friends charity, the word champion actually seems inadequate. How he gave to others with absolute genuineness and never asking for anything in return makes him a true legend. Vale Russell, the world is saddened.

I've seen on other forums that he should have a state funeral and apparently the premiers has offered this to the family
