Most goals in a seconds game?

Here's one for the stats freaks. What is the most goals scored in a Seconds/Reserves/Association game?

According to the 1962 Year Book. M.Shaw of West Torrens is the proud holder of the record to that time with 26 goals scored in 1940. That is the record up to the end of the 1961 season. Has anyone heard of a greater total being kicked since. I doubt it myself.

I'm assuming that's Merv Shaw who topped Torrens' Goalkicking in 1941 with 61 Goals.

No, haven't heard of any more than that.

I think that's the match in which Torrens Association kicked 40 goals something. I'll have to see if I noted it down somewhere what the exact score was.

Makes you wonder how a guy can kick 121 goals in a seconds team. You'd think he could/should have got a few more league games if he was in good form.

Does anyone have a list of the leading goalkickers for each season in the Seconds?

Interesting thought. It's not like the West Torrens league team was setting the world on fire that year.

Good point NH because that was the same year Farmer booted the league record for one game (23 goals) and that was against West Torrens!

Most i know of in recent times is Ian Trimboli with 16 for the Doggies in 1991, a few weeks after Darren Grant nailed 13 for the Eagles iirc.

I think Craig Burton kicked 17 or 18 for West in a Reserves game.

Slightly off topic, but Ken Whelan kicked 106 goals for Sturt reserves in 1972 before kicking 107 and 108 league goals in 1973 and 1974.

In 1938, a player named Sidney Loader played 1 league game at half forward for Norwood in round 2 and failed to kick a goal. However, in 18 reserves games that season he booted 130 goals including bags of 21, 19, 12 and 10.

The reason he couldn't get a league spot was Bruce Schultz in the goal front, and when he was injured Ron Brown filled in at FF. Schultz kicked 60 goals from 11 games and Brown 86 goals from 19.

Would be interesting to know how the SA selectors went when deciding who to play out of Ken Farmer and Schulz in state games. Presumably Farmer was played at full forward, and Schulz was either in a pocket, or left out of the side?

I'm not sure of the selected teams, but all I can tell you is Schultz played 6 state games and kicked 23 goals.

Schultz was unfortunate enough to be injured himself in 1938 when the injured Farmer couldn't play two games against Western Australia. The selectors then went for Bo Morton as full forward.

Considering that in 1940 the world was being set on fire.
