Greatest turnarounds in SANFL games

Postby westozfalcon » Wed Nov 22, 2006 6:25 pm

What are the biggest point turnarounds you've ever seen in games of local footy?

I'm from WA and in the WAFL the most amazing I witnessed was in 1995 when my side, West Perth trailed Perth by 28pts at quarter time - 5.4 to 0.6. After that slow start we fired up and eventually ran out 25.19 to 10.16 winners - a margin of 93 points and a 121pt turnaround from the 1st quarter!

Any similar stories from the SANFL?

Biggest one I saw was a Glenelg v Sturt game in a preseason tourny called the Foundation Cup. They were shortened quarters and at 3/4 time Sturt were 59 points up. Glenelg went on to kick 10 goals to zip (I think) with the last being after the siren for a 1 pt win, the most amazing win/comeback Ive seen.

i was about to put that up, jim west kicked last of the 10 for that quarter

another game was a glenelg v west game at glenelg in the early 90's west led by 40 odd points at 3/4 time & we stormed home to snatch a draw with a david marshall goal that bounced through

Think Norwood were about nine goals down at three quarter time to Torrens at Thebby in the early eighties and went on to win the game.

From the records I have, this would be the greatest (well within two quarters)

Round 2 1938, South trailed Glenelg by 16 points at quarter time, but by 3QT they lead by 100.

South 5.2 15.5 27.8 31.15 (201)
Glenelg 8.0 8.2 11.4 17.7 (109)
Adelaide, 4046

There was a gale blowing that day, which the Bays had in the last quarter. When scores were level, Ross Gibbs had the chance to kick long to the goalsquare, but (in character) went the torp, off the side of the boot, siren, draw.

The 3 Magarey Medal votes that day went to that household name Peter Foott, I think.

that is almost right but not much of a breeze & gibbsy was almost on the wing he was at least 70 metres from goal so of course he went for the torp

You're right, bayman, he was at least 70 out, but you know Ross. With the fierce wind at his back, he thought he could win it with a torp.

The wind was strong, I think Westies kicked a heap in the 3rd quarter with it?

He was a champ Gibbsy.

Good ole West Perth product too!

Central actually kicked the first goal of the match (1.0 to 0.2).

Dont know what you're talking about Jimmy

Game was in 83' and I think Sturt kicked a goal just as the clock ticked into time-on to put them 25 points behind and they ended up winning by 7 points ... The teams were missing about 11 players who were on state duty in WA (Aish, Mcintosh, Davies and co.) yet the game was a cracking standard ... Willmott debuted and finished with 6 or so.

Would probably go down as a "Classic" if not for the result!

I remember that game. West were down by 9 goals early in the 2nd qtr.
Slowly worked thier way back into the game and Scott Simmister took
a specky in the goalsquare and kicked a goal with about a minuite to go
to win the game..

The biggest turnaround I have seen would actually be the Eagles/Norwood Round 20 match this year; I posted a couple of weeks before that stating that this year there had been no scoreless quarters by one side. The last year that this happened was 1987 (Punk will remember that comment)

Norwoods' third quarter of that match became the only scoreless quarter this year; scores went from 3.6 vs 8.6 halfway through the second, to 15.14 vs 8.6 at 3 quarter time.
