For most consecutive weeks in the top 5. It is a club overall record as well.

Christ, that one caught me by suprise, thanks Spelly, I'll spread the word on the Roost!
Who would have thought that after the worst season in our club's history in 2004, what an unbelievable turnaround!

It excludes the team(s) that have the first round bye either from 1907-1920 or 1991 onwards.

Hmm hard one first up to keep the streak going this year - Dogs at Elizabeth! Have to either win or have the smallest losing margin that round.

P.S. Wedgie - the nightmare was in 2003 BTW!

Not the Bays, but you made the top 5 (it's all in the original post)

South 118
Sturt 115
Central 101
Glenelg 91
Woodville 88

Current

West 45
Sturt 23
Norwood 15
Glenelg 2

It will still be 2, you will have to wait 'till round 2 to chalk up another one

The fact that Norwood's all-time-record period out of the top 4/5 is contemporary, goes to show how strong the team has been historically. (Ditto for North Adelaide.) As well as showing how depressing the last few years have been for Legs fans. Although it is interesting that our 'worst' run fell in a one-spoon period; whereas historically, Norwood's worst era by a long way was 1912-13-14-15-19 (no footy being played in 1916-18), the club finishing 2nd-bottom in 1912 and collecting the spoon on the subsequent 4 occasions in a row. Was there the odd bright start to one of those years that broke the run, or were there just too few games played per season in those days?

PS Woodville's worst-ever run of 88 games is amazingly good, considering that from 1964-77 their best-ever finish to a season was 7th. They obviously had a habit of starting the year brightly to give the fans a bit of good ol' false hope! They were also 'successful' in collecting only 3 spoons from 16 years across 1964-79: an exceptional performance given they were perilously close to the bottom of the ladder for almost the whole period. They certainly made up for it with the very consistent 1980-85 seasons, though.

Every year between 1912 and 1919 Norwood started the year in the 4.

Norwood were in the 4 between 1912-1919 in the following rounds:
1912 - Rounds 1 to 9 and 12
1913 - Round 1
1914 - Rounds 1 to 4
1915 - Rounds 1 and 2
1919 - Rounds 2 and 3 (excludes 1st Round bye)

Between 1980 and 1985 Woodville were in the 5 on these occasions:
Rounds 1 and 2 1984; Rounds 1 and 3 1985.

If Sturt had not had a decent run at the start of the 1994 season, they would have easily taken out the record that South set between 1947 and 1953.
The only weeks between 1989 and 1996 Sturt were in the 5 was the first 8 rounds of 1994.

Thanks spelly. Now that's a weird record. Would have to be the only time in SANFL history (or probably the history of any top-level comp in Australia), that a team won its first match for 4 seasons in a row... and wound up finishing last every one of those seasons. Goes to show that finalists are made and broken in the long slog through winter, not with the fresh legs, high spirits and hard grounds of April.
