Was the Jumbo a better footballer than Super?

In my opinion yes.

I'd say Jumbo was the better footballer, kicked 152 goals after he was over the hill out of position.
Carey's longetivity was incredible though and he was a great player.

Jumbo probably had more of the skill and athleticism where Carey probably tried harder.

Let's just all agree that they were both great players.

Rucking Super hands down.....even as a begrudging admirer of Rick Davies checkside work at the Ruck contest. The line across the circle limited Davies ability in the centre square and hastened his move forward to the goal square........

However when you look at all round ability around the ground it has to be Rick Davies, his efforts at full forward......not to say super wasn't super when he went forward and when he played as a follower....

In other words you can't split them.....the are both legends of the SANFL

As Barrie Robran said Cornes, Ebert, Carey, Bagshaw, Davies and two others are part of the magnificent 7 of SANFL footy in the 70s (I'm sure Barrie himself is one of the other two ........)

That's a cop-out mate, but I wholeheartedly agree!

Both the Jumbo Prince & Soops had their seperate merits & shouldn't be compared
souly on the fact that they were both great players, legends at their respective clubs

Just for the record Rick Davies was an All-Australian as well as State Captain for 2 years running.
Davies played in 2 premiership sides in Ruck.
Carey played in 3 premiership sides named in Ruck once, Forward Pocket once and CHF once.
Davies is 5th on the all time leading goalkickers in SANFL with 781 with the only 4 players in front of him having played full forward all their career (Farmer, Evans, Phillis and Owens).
Carey is 17th on the all time leading goalkickers in SANFL with 521.
Davies played 350 games.
Carey played 448 games.
Davies won 7 Sturt B&Fs (1973-1976, 1978-1980)
Carey won 3 Glenelg B&Fs (1975, 1979 & 1981)
Davies was Captain of Sturt for 3 seasons.
Carey was Captain of Glenelg for 6 seasons.
Davies was leading goalkicker for Sturt for 3 seasons and South for 2 seasons.
Carey was leading goalkicker for Glenelg for 1 season.

In short both are legends of the SANFL

It is worth noting on Davies behalf, that his checkside ruck work hastened the introduction of the line across the circle at centre bounces in SA. IIRC it was introduced in the 1981 season 2-3 years after it has been introduced in the VFL. In a nutshell he is one of those rare sportspersons (like Walter Lindrum) who has had rules changed to nullify his brillance

I remember the bleating from other clubs bemoaning his and Sturts 'tactics" in the centre square, particularly Kerley at West Torrens, in the 1980 season....(Always been good whingers at the Eagles   )

Once the line was introduced his lack of height told against him so when he came back from Hawthon in 1982 it was straight to the forward lines for Rick....

Davies club held him in low enough regard to sack him
Carey's club allowed him to retire of his own volition after nearly 2 decades of service

In all seriousness, I reckon Tassie hit the nail on the head. Super the first choice ruckman, but Jumbo with better versatility to sit at full-forward waiting for Super to have a rest.

Davies in his rucking heyday (73-78) was never beaten by SANFL opponents no matter how hard Carey,Button,Kennedy tried ! He then became a goalkicking legend. Carey didn't really climb in stature as a SANFL ruckman until Davies had shifted down to the Sturt forward lines...
