Glen vs Nor Rd 6 1974 & Nor vs North Rd 5 1975 scores

Anything to do with the history of the SANFL

Glen vs Nor Rd 6 1974 & Nor vs North Rd 5 1975 scores

Postby spell_check » Sun Mar 04, 2007 1:23 pm

I have the scorers from the highest scoring games in terms of scoring shots (27 out of the 32 matches with 80 or more scoring shots in them)

Two of them do not add up to the scorers (they came out of the Advertiser)
Glenelg vs Norwood in 1974 I have the following:
Nor: Olsen 7.2, Woodcock 4.1, Turbill 4.1, Wynne 3.2, Carman 3.1, Craig 2.2, Schlein, Gallagher 2.1, Dillon 1.1, Packer 0.2, Rushed 0.1.
Glen: Sandland 6.2, Wickens 4.3, C.Anderson 4.0, MacFarlane 2.1, Voigt, Cornes 1.1, Marker 0.2, Hamilton 0.1, Rushed 0.5.

That adds up to 27.15 to 18.16 when it should be 27.17 to 21.17

Norwood vs North in 1975 I have:
Nor: Dillon 6.3, Roberts 6.1, Rosser 3.3, Woodcock 3.2, Turbill 2.2, Wynne 2.1, Nicholson, Nalder, Gregg 1.0, Gallagher 0.2, Craig 0.1, Rushed 0.6.
N.A: Sandland 6.5, Marsh 4.0, Hill, Tuckey 3.0, Stringer 2.0, McInnes 1.2, R.Robran, Hill 1.1, Myles 1.0, Rushed 0.3.

That adds up to 25.21 to 21.12 when it should be 26.22 to 24.12

Would anyone have the enitre scores from these matches that add up to the match total?

I don't know what to say ... my edition of the Football Budget for this round is MISSING!!! The police have secured the area and nobody is being allowed to leavce the building without a full body and bag search. I must have pulled it out for some reason and put it back in the wrong spot.

I can help you with the goalkickers though, which would make North Adelaide's total correct, but Norwood still 1 behind short.

For Norwood, John Wynne kicked 3 goals, not 2.
For North Adelaide, Hill kicked 4, Schlein 1, Gum 1.

Many thanks. 8)

Also, I'd like to know your recollections on Peter Roberts as well as career summary on him, please. I only know he played 23 games between 1974 and 1977, but he got 6 goals in the 1975 match. Was he a stand in forward player or something like that?

It's just my weird sense of humour Spelly :)

You'll be happy to know I found the missing budget, and Glen Rosser kicked 3-4, so there's your missing behind.

To answer your question about Peter Roberts, he was a very handy tall forward (about 6'3") with good hands and reliable left foot kick for goal, a local from Campbelltown HS. He played 23 games and kicked 30 goals for Norwood. He had a good start to 1975 as the regular Full Forward but lost his spot to Bill Nalder around mid-season.

He made his way back into the team just before the finals and kicked a couple of bags of 3 goals in the last 2 rounds. However, come finals be booted only 1 v Glenelg (2S), and 0 v Port Adelaide (PF). He was replaced by Jim Michalanney in the Grand Final team, which in retrospect was a stroke of genius by the Norwood selectors.

He was probaly more suited to CHF, but Ross Dillon and then Greg Parke held that position leaving no opportunities for Roberts.

After that, Roberts struggled to get a game and transferred mid 1977 to West Torrens where he played 43 games for 6 goals. I think he played mainly at CHB for them.

Peter was also a very handy medium fast bowler for East Torrens 1st XI in the SACA, taking 7/50 in one match. He suffered from back problems which saw a pre-mature end to his football and cricket careers. Last I heard he was running a sports and aquatic program for the Education Department.

I should have known that he was at Torrens as well! Although it could have been another Peter Roberts.

From the Torrens book his record was this:
1977: 8 games 3 goals 1 behind (debuted in Round 14, missed the last round to injury)
1978: 22 games 0.0 (missed Round 19 to injury)
1980: 9 games 2.1 (Rds 14 to EF, except Rd 19)
1981: 4 games 1.0 (The first three matches, including the night series match)

These are the missing matches:

81 Glenelg 28 31 199 Woodville 11 11 77 9 1976 Glenelg
81 Central 27 17 179 Torrens 23 14 152 21 1976 Thebarton
80 South 26 18 174 Glenelg 21 15 141 7 1976 Adelaide
80 Central 22 20 152 West 20 18 138 19 1982 Richmond

Spelly, I didn't keep point scorers after 1975. I guess I considered them as poor kicking :)
I can offer you goalkickers for these matches if you like, but you'd have to research them for the points.
Also, the match Central v Torrens wasn't in 1976. Can you check the year?

Also, one more favour I'd like to ask. I have also done the same for 30- scoring shots in a match and if you have the 1968 match between Port 5.6 (36) and West 2.2 (14) in Round 7 1968 at Alberton?

No behinds I'm afraid, but goalkickers were:
PA: R.Ebert 2, P.Obst, Salmon, Beaufoy.
WA: G.Sims, Pannenburg.

Geez, I remember that day like it was yesterday. It rained all bloody day and I was at Norwood Oval watching the Redlegs get rolled by Woodville. I played U13s that morning and kicked more goals than Norwood did :)

I can just imagine what the weather was like with the scores:
Round 7 1968
North 4.1 5.2 6.4 7.9 (51)
Central 0.5 1.6 1.7 5.9 (39)
Adelaide, 4296

Port 2.1 4.2 5.5 5.6 (36)
West 2.1 2.2 2.2 2.2 (14)
Alberton, 7009

Glenelg 2.1 5.3 7.5 10.7 (67)
South 1.0 2.0 6.1 7.2 (44)
Glenelg, 4512

Sturt 2.2 3.3 6.8 6.8 (44)
Torrens 1.2 2.8 2.8 5.12 (42)
Thebarton, 4815

Woodville 2.2 8.3 8.3 10.5 (65)
Norwood 0.2 1.3 2.9 4.10 (34)
Norwood, 4306

It must have been a fantastic feat by any player to kick 5 goals on that day! 1968 was a miserable year for weather as a whole.

Most goals kicked that day were by Woodville's David "Nipper" Christie who kicked four.

And look at the crowds that day too. Only 4,000 at Norwood Oval would give you an idea of how wet it was. I've followed footy for 40 years and 1968 was easily the wettest winter I can recall. It seemed like every week I played in mud, then watched the league in the rain during the afternoon. And it was bloody cold as well.

I remember one morning I was playing and it was raining and hailing so hard I couldn't see the ball more than 50 metres away.

Peter Roberts is now involved on the Board at Sturt

Did football used to be played in the wet winter months?
