Was there only one match? Does anyone have details of scorers, teams or best players? Found this pic from the match recently:

may 1990 wasn't it because Victoria played NSW instead of us as "punishment" for not joining the AFL.

Country (The Advertiser) beat City (The News). Papers got behind the different sides to help promote the game.

Country was coached by Cahill with Port support staff and City was coached by Cornes - with Glenelg Support staff as the two dominant clubs of the late 80s pre Crows era

IIRC correctly Schwerdt did his knee in that game.

Country wore red, City wore blue....
Let that be a lesson to you Port, no one beats the Bays five times in a row in a GF and gets away with it!!!

Most memorable moment from that game was EJ's reaction to the loss.
Arms hanging over balcony railing, gaunt look on his face, looking as if
we'd just lost to SA.
If one person does it, it's insanity. If millions do it, it's religion.

FWIW, the SANFL recognizes the City v Country match as a state game...

In League, 'N.S.W. City versus N.S.W. Country' matches still remain a big deal!
However with interstate AFL draftees etc. the concept couldn't really work here in the SANFL nowadays!

I went to that game and may have the Football Budget from the game somewhere ..... I remember it as an exhibition game with no real passion on the field or in the crowd, but still a reasonable crowd in the circumstances I think.

Someone mentioned the old SANFL retention scheme ... might be an interesting thread to get the full list of players who were in that scheme. Rudi Mandermaker and Scott Salisbury are two names that come to mind. I remember a lot of debate about Michael Aish's absence from the scheme because of his low AFL prospects (due to age) at the time.

I know they played City v Country matches in the late 1800's also played games billed as South v North (which I took to mean players North of the Torrens v players South of the Torrens).

I remember A. Jarman booting the ball into the crowd after a free kick was paid against him because he thought the game was a joke...

I don't recall being too interested either
