Clash of shorts in 1990 Grand Final

Postby Hondo » Wed Apr 18, 2007 10:26 pm

Does anyone know the story behind both Glenelg and Port Adelaide wearing black shorts in the 1990 Grand Final. IIRC Port, having lost the 2nd semi final, were meant to wear white shorts but refused. Was this the case and, if so, why? And when did the officials realise what was happening? Oviously too late to do anything about it. Was it a sign of the turbulent times in 1990?

Yep they were suspposed to do wear white shorts, got me ****** why Chambers - his first GF and Kinnear didn't make them change when they saw them before the game...

I susppose Port were thumbing their nose at the SANFL....
Let that be a lesson to you Port, no one beats the Bays five times in a row in a GF and gets away with it!!!

Didn't Glenelg wear white shorts? Been so long, and I certainly have no desire to watch it again

I always thought the choice of shorts colour went to the team which finished higher at the end of the minor round - and thus Port had the right to black shorts?

Nah there is a footy budget going around (last round 1991 I think) with a picture from that game with both teams in black shorts....

We defiantely wore white shorts in 1981, 1988 and 1992. 1990 we wore black shorts....

Small issue really, I think the law regarding white vs dark shorts is a local law only and the penalty doesn't affect the outcome of the game.

A fine was what Port might have gt IIRC

A bit off topic, but still on the subject of shorts... do Central always wear white shorts?

You know your club better than I do Smac, but I thought Centrals wore the blue and dare I say red shorts (once when they played us in 1992 at footy Pk when we came back from 8 goals in the last qtr IIRC (might have been the last time they wore teh shorts)) for the first couple of years in the new guernsey.

I thought the move to white shorts occured about 1994-95 in Stewarts last couple of years??

can anyone confirm....

Don't count on your first point tas, my time at the club coincided with the change and my original thoughts were that Kerls changed the lot. I recently discovered I was wrong about the guernsey and may well be wrong about the rest...

Having said that, I recall getting white shorts in my playing days and my last season was 92 - I can't recall if they were the only shorts I got that year.

I remember the garish red shorts. YUK. Perhaps they were a strategy to put the dogs' opponents off their game?

A quick search of newstext turned up an article from December '93 in which the Eagles GM suggested Central wear white or red shorts instead of blue to reduce visual clashes between the clubs.

Not sure where my white ones came from then!

Still have a red pair with the PYE Audio logo somewhere around home, along with my white guernsey. Might break them out for 80's round in a few weeks.

I am pretty sure in the first year of the new guernsey in 1992, they wore blue shorts as the home strip. I recall that Kerls hated the whole 80s outfit when he arrived in 1988 but was only able to change the socks (from mostly white to blue, red & white hoops). Don't know why he couldn't change the top too.

I am a bit of trivia freak, and also guernseys, colours logos etc. I keep a record of such things. I don't claim 100% accuracy but pretty close.

According to my records Centrals wore red shorts for colour clashes from 1988 - 1992. They then changed to white shorts for colour clashes in 1993, this continued in 1994 then from round 21 and during the finals they wore white shorts. From 1995 they wore white shorts at home and away. In the 1994 Annual report the team photo is in Blue shorts and for the 1995 team photo the players are wearing white shorts.

Interestingly, during 1995 & 1996 South were wearing white shorts as their 1st choice and Centrals wore blue in both games against South during these 2 years.

From memory Centrals adopted the blue shorts around 1975 to coincide with the introduction of colour television.

As you say Centrals wear white shorts every week but this fact seemed to escape Port Adelaide one time. I can't remember if it was a final or a game at Elizabeth but both teams were wearing white shorts until the Magpies changed to Black at half time. Considering who the opponent was I seem to think it was a final and I wouldn't put it past them to have done it deliberately!
