Worst season/Winless Streak at Home

Postby therisingblues » Fri Jul 06, 2007 1:19 am

Curious about Port Adelaide's home ground record this year, and how it stacks up against their history. This year Port have a won 2 (against West and South), lost 4 (Sturt, Norwood, North, Eagles), drew 1 (Glenelg) record at Alberton. On top of that they have gone winless in their past 4 appearances at Alberton (that includes a draw to the Bays hence "winless").
For the remainder of this year, Port have Centrals, Sturt and Norwood at Alberton. Are we witnessing history unfolding here in the form of Port's poorest season at Alberton? I cannot remember any season when Port had such a terrible home ground record. Spelly, do you have any information on Port and the other side's worst season or their longest winless (or losing) streak at their current homes? Much appreciated as always! :D

Woodville went from Round 17 1980 (v Central, Trevor Sapwell (!) in the best players) to Round 16 1984 (the slog in the mud against Sturt, "don't pull a hamstring Malcolm", ball sails through 3/4 post height, "dear oh dear") without a win at Woodville Oval - 27 consecutive home losses.

I wouldn't be surprised if Port can score a win against Centrals at Alby.
They also put it up against us there...

Given that Glenelg didn't win a game in its first 4 seasons, beat Torrens at Glenelg in round 1 of the 5th season, and there were 7 other teams in the comp, did the Bays lose 7x4 = 28 consecutive home games?

Yep, it was 28 straight losses at home. :(

I can't answer your questions at the moment trb, for the program at Officeorg.com is too slow to even open the file. But I think that the longest winning streak at home is what Psuedoecky answered.

Ports' worst season at Alberton was in 1983 - 2 wins 6 losses. This is the most number of games Port has lost in a season at Alberton. The most number of games Port has lost in a row at Alberton (and also the winless record) is 5 matches - Round 13 1949 to Round 4 1950.

Other teams:
(Team, worst season; most consecutive losses/winless)
Central, 1964 - 0 wins 7 losses; 8 losses, Round 14 1969 to Round 9 1970
Eagles, 1997 - 3 wins 6 losses; 5 losses, Round 18 1996 to Round 8 1997
Glenelg, 1921, 22, 23, 24, 35, 54 - 0 wins 7 losses, 1961 - 0 wins 8 losses; 28 losses, Round 3 1921 to Round 12 1924
North, 2003 - 1 win 8 losses; 10 losses, Round 10 1999 to Round 11 2000
Norwood, 1919 - 0 wins 6 losses, 1968 - 1 win 8 losses; 13 winless (the 7th match was a draw), Round 2 1968 to Round 13 1969
South, 1999 - 1 win 7 losses, 2002 - 1 win 8 losses; 11 winless (the last winless match was a draw), Round 4 2002 to Round 9 2003
Sturt, 1908 - 0 wins 6 losses; 1950, 51, 56 - 1 win 7 losses; 11 losses, Round 5 1907 to Round 14 1908
West, 2006 - 0 wins 9 losses; 13 losses, Round 17 2005 to Round 1 2007

And for Torrens and Woodville:
Torrens, 1941 - 1 win 7 losses; 7 losses, Round 22 1988 to Round 17 1989
Woodville, 1967 - 1 draw 8 losses, 1981, 82 - 0 wins, 7 losses, 1983 - 0 wins, 8 losses; 27 losses, Round 19 1980 to Round 11 1984

Spelly, Are you taking into consideration that Adelaide Oval was sturts home ground for a few years ?

I reckon we lost more than 6 games at AO in a row in the early 90's

trb asked for current home ground streaks. I'm not sure which matches that Sturt and South played at Adelaide which were classed as neutral anyway, although technically you could call it a home match.

Sort of sums Woodville's mediocrity up really - they aren't even the best at being the worst!!!! :D :D
Let that be a lesson to you Port, no one beats the Bays five times in a row in a GF and gets away with it!!!

This is a little bit off topic, but still in the realm of winless streaks, but Jackal, on the main footy page, has just pointed out that Port's longest losing streak was 7 games. Including the draw with the Bays, Port now has gone 7 weeks without a win, equalling the old record. (the old record was actually established with a loss to Woodville, so I am guessing that record was set in about 1984).
Port have North at Prospect this week. Surely the Roosters will deliver a piece of footy history this weekend, given the form of both clubs.

That match was either:

Round 9 1983 at Football Park. Paul Harradine booted an enormous goal from one step forward of the centre circle - bounced a few metres out and through for a goal. Blighty booted 6-6 - the next week he kicked 7-7!

Round 9 1985 at Adelaide Oval. Blighty kicked 9 on (I think) Martin Leslie.

Wow i remember the sturt game in 1984, i was in the Barry Jarman stand and saw blighty kick that goal. what great memories :D

Trevor Sapwell LOL , i remember him , he kicked the last goal to our last game at prospect in 1980. one of three. Not a great year to remember 1980 but it was better that 1982!

I was at both games!!A great game in 1985 what a comeback after half time. Im pretty sure that was 1983 when port lost those 7 games, i remember that game for many things Harro centre square goal , bomber clifford king hitting Eugene Taheny at least twice , blighty goal which was clearly touched by danny hughes and still given a goal , so he booted the ball into the grange golf course without getting reported, and to top it off trying to catch a bus from footy park to the city while getting abused by port supporters. i used to love watching there faces when they lose. Ah the memeries :D

I seem to remember that one, pretty sure it was a Sunday game as it was live on TV.
