SA Hall of Fame Inducts 10 new Nominees Tonight

Postby Wedgie » Tue Aug 14, 2007 11:50 pm

10 INDUTEES JOIN A LEAGUE OF SOUTH AUSTRALIAN FOOTBALL GREATS
South Australia’s elite parade of football legends grew to 160 tonight with the induction of 10 new heroes to the West End South Australian Football Hall of Fame, at a glitzy presentation dinner at AAMI Stadium.
Among the inductees was dual Magarey Medallist Andrew Jarman, giving the SA Football Hall of Fame its second set of brothers. The Jarmans – Andrew and Darren, who was inducted last year – join Norwood greats, brothers John and Anthony ‘Bos’ Daly in the Hall.
Also inducted tonight were dual Adelaide premiership captain Mark Bickley, Magarey Medallist and SANFL goalkicking record holder Scott Hodges, Port Adelaide, Collingwood, North Melbourne, Adelaide and state midfielder Bruce Abernethy, West Torrens and country great Kevin McSporran, two media personalities Ian Day and Max Hall who after playing or umpiring in the SANFL were pioneers in its television coverage, Glenelg and Carlton champion Andrew McKay and the late Jeff Bray and John Taylor, who was the first player to reach the 200-game milestone in the SANFL.
Bickley captured the pride of the 10 inductees when he said “I am certainly in very privileged company when I note who is in the Hall of Fame. To be considered worthy of being among these greats is indeed humbling. We have a place where the greats of every era can gather to pass on the legends of the South Australian game and make sure the traditions of the SANFL are never lost. I feel that responsibility to listen to the stories of the greats and make sure they are passed on to the future generations of our game.''

The charter of the South Australian Football Hall of Fame is to recognise and enshrine players, coaches, umpires, administrators and journalists who have made a most significant contribution to the game of Australian Football in South Australia since its inception in 1877.
To ensure the public is clear as to who is eligible for induction there are two main criteria that must be met:
- A player may only be eligible for induction into the Hall of Fame if that player has retired from playing Australian Football for a minimum period of three years.
- Coaches, umpires, administrators and journalists may only be eligible for induction into the Hall of Fame upon retirement.

Andrew McKay is an interesting inductee.

40 games for Glenelg and the rest ( a lot!) with Carlton.
6 state games yes, but given the criteria talks about "contributions to Aust football in SA", he looks a bit light on against this criteria?

A great footballer no question, but I'm just not sure what got him over the line here?

Reakon it's fair enough.

Guess that's why it's the South Australian Football Hall of Fame and not the SANFL Hall of Fame.

Last thing we want is the crap that plagues the Australian Football Hall of Fame/VFL Hall of Fame.

Because it would be a great shame if future 'SA Greats' weren't able to be honoured by the SA Hall of Fame.

One could argue that it would be devalued if likely future inductees such as Pavlich, O'Loughlin etc were excluded because they plied their trade interstate...

But how many mini league games did Ian Day play to get his life membership?

I was going to write the same thing but cause its the SA football hall of fame (not the SANFL Hall of Fame) where people who didnt play an SANFl game but contributed greatly in country areas for instance are eligible.

Yeah but aren't the country areas still in South Australia?
Last time I looked Carlton weren't.

Using the criteria they used Ted Whitten could have been born at Mount Gambier, moved to Footscary when he was 1 day old and be eligiblwe for the SA football hall of fame?

I see your point and I agree that its a dodgy induction.
Just trying to point out how the SANFL might be justifying this.

mmmmm. I am a huge fan of Macca...sensational player for the Blues. It is the SA Hall of fame, so I guess that is how he get's the nod.
If you look at the games played, similar to Bickley, so ???

I'd have to see the full list of members to see wether it's a just fit for BOTH macca and Bickley...

Yeah but Bickley played all of his career with a club based in South Australia whilst playing most of his football in South Australia so I can understand that appointment.
I assume from McKay's induction that you merely need to be born here or start your footy here?
Is Wayne Carey in there?
I would assume so as he played his junior football in South Australia and finished off his football career with a club in South Australia and was a better player than most.

If thats the case what about Braddles & Sticks ? They played the majority of their footy in VIC, as did Platts. Would've thought if it's a SA HALL OF FAME then if you represent a club in the highest grade competition, no matter who you played for, and you are South Australian, and the judges deem you worthy..you're in. Macca was drafted by the Blues, so therefore the way the game is now, most good young kids get drafted, often to interstate clubs, so in future years we may see the inclusions of Pavlich, Gibbs, Ottens, Camporeale etc etc have the same questions raised.

Yeah fair enough but I would have thought that Braddles and Sticks played a lot more games than McKay.

I suppose one thing to consider is McKay's games in State of Origin, mind you Wayne Carey also played in a State of Origin, I wonder if he'll ever get into the SA HOF if its consistent?

I would be very disappointed if Carey makes the SA Hall of Fame.
He played one state of origin game, but holds more store in the fact he's from Wagga.
Played very limited games with his SA based AFL club.

He will allows be regarded as a NSW product who played his footy for a Victorian club.

He only played 13 less games for the Crows than McKay played for Glenelg.

Im not having a go at the selection of McKay, just the possible inconsistincies, he was a great player and ambassador of the game.

Does anyone have a full list of the SA Hall of Fame inductees?

On a side note, I see Rucci wrote all the articles on the SA Hall of Fame today, obviously doesn't mind attending black tie dinners with drinks, food and entertainment but I don't see too many SANFL articles by him.

Re: SA Hall of Fame Inducts 10 new Nominees Tonight

From NAFC.com.au:

Tribute to Andrew Jarman

The North Adelaide Football Club congratulates Andrew Newton Jarman on his induction into the SANFL Hall of Fame on 14 August 2007. Andrew joins his brother Darren who was inducted into the SANFL Hall of Fame last year.

Known as the Magician of Prospect from his early playing days, Andrew had a decorated playing career with North Adelaide, Norwood and the Adelaide Crows. He then turned to coaching, first taking Gaza to a premiership and more recently helping to resurrect the North Adelaide Football Club. In his first year as Senior Coach in 2004 he was able to use his considerable motivational skills to lift North Adelaide from the bottom into the finals and the Club has participated in the finals every year since.

League scouts began to take an interest in Andrew Jarman while he was playing for Gaza’s junior teams. Chased by several League clubs, it was at North Adelaide where his heart belonged, due in no uncertain terms to his idol, Barrie Robran.

In 1982 Jarman played with North’s very strong Under 17 side, and within 2 seasons would be promoted to League ranks. In Round 5, 1983, Jarman played his first League game versus Glenelg at the Bay. While the day was a special one for the young 17-year old, it was made even more memorable with North’s come-from-behind win. To add to the moment, Jarman’s first League kick resulted in a goal.

Despite only a handful of games in 1983, the signs were there that Andrew Jarman would soon be a regular selection in the League side. In 1984 he played 18 games and became an integral part of North’s fast, skill-orientated, promising young side, but it was in 1985 when Andrew’s magical talent was really at the fore for the football public to see. Now playing in the centre, he, along with the Club, had a glorious season, reaching the Grand Final. On a personal level, Andrew polled strongly in many media awards, and received North’s Best and Fairest award for his outstanding season. It was also in 1985 that Jarman was to realise another ambition by playing State football for the first time. In 1986, after a slow start, Andrew continued to dominate League football, and with younger brother Darren joining him in the League side, formed a “sixth sense” partnership that would dazzle other clubs for the next few years.

In 1987, all that Andrew could wish for in football would come true. The club would consummately win the Premiership, losing only 3 games out of the 24 for the season, and he would win the Magarey Medal as the League’s Best and Fairest. Renowned as being a flamboyant player with a larrikin character to match, the announcement of his Medal win brought silence from Andrew – some saying for the first time for many years.

Jarman continued to play dynamic, consistent football for North through 1988 and 1989, forming with Darel Hart, Steven Sims and brother Darren the always formidable “engine room” of North Adelaide. Despite winning his second Best and Fairest and being a leader in North’s onslaught to another Grand Final, 1989 would be his last at North Adelaide. After the 1989 Grand Final, which resulted in a disastrous loss, Jarman decided to leave North to make a fresh start at another club.

Andrew’s career certainly didn’t slow down after leaving North Adelaide. After completing a season with Norwood, he joined the newly formed Adelaide Crows, playing in their first AFL game (lining up against brother Darren, then at Hawthorn) and going on to play for six seasons. During this time he continued to represent South Australia, winning five Fos Williams Medals during his 15 State appearances. After his AFL career he returned to Norwood where, in 1997, he won his second Magarey Medal and Norwood’s Best and Fairest with the team taking out the Premiership. With all this having come to him, 1997 seemed a fitting year to end his League playing career.

Andrew joins brother Darren as the only brothers to be part of North Adelaide’s Team of the Century. He will always be remembered as the Magician of Prospect…

But as far as I'm aware, the SA Hall of Fame isn't contingent on actually having played great amounts of SANFL football in this state. Otherwise McKay wouldn't have been selected and neither would those members who're from the country.

McKay is a South Australian product, Carey (as much as many would like to claim him) is not and will never be considered as such.

I understand you're not debating McKay's position - a great ambassador for the game and our state - but I would always debate Carey being included. In my mind, he's not the best player to use in this debate about relevance to SA footy.

I think Nathan Buckley might be a more worthy person to debate this over. Played much more football here in SA than Duck. Has won a medal and a premiership in this state after moving here from the NT. But, is he South Australian. I'm not certain.
You're my only friend, and you don't even like me.

Pretty sure Antrobus was in the last intake - earlier this year(?).

I remember, because I disagree with his inclusion. Good player, has a Magarey but not HoF standard. Bruce Abernathy is another marginal call in my view.

And McKay should not be in there - unless 2 or 3 solid state matches gets you the nod.

They need to decide if this HoF is an SANFL HoF or a state-based HoF. At the moment it is both, and some of those getting recognised would be more appropriate in the AFL HoF.
