This occured for the third time on the weekend, Eagles winning only the third quarter, but won the match. This is the 196th time that this has happened in an SANFL match, and the third occasion this year. In Round 7, Norwood beat West but only won the last quarter. In Round 18, Glenelg beat West, but only won the last quarter.

The last time North Adelaide has been on the receiving end of a loss but won three quarters was in Round 23 2004, to South Adelaide. South only won the 3rd quarter. North last won a match by only winning one quarter (the 4th) was in Round 7 last year, against Port.

The last time Eagles won a match by only winning one quarter (the 1st) was in Round 17 2004, against West. The last time Eagles have won three quarters but lost was against North in Round 20 2004. North only won the 2nd quarter.

37 times a team has won by only winning the first quarter, 70 times by only winning the 2nd, 43 times by only winning the third and 46 times by only winning the last quarter.

The biggest winning margin a team has had by winning only one quarter is 41 points:

Round 3 1976
Norwood 4.1 5.3 9.4 18.9 (117)
Port 4.3 5.6 9.9 11.10 (76)
Football Park, 20321

This is a table of win/loss records by each team being involved in a match when the winner only wins one quarter:

Code: Select all
Team       P   W   L
Central   18  10   8
Eagles     4   3   1
Glenelg   33  15  18
North     47  19  28
Norwood   52  25  27
Port      52  27  25
South     40  19  21
Sturt     38  16  22
Torrens   47  28  19
West      51  27  24
Woodville 10   7   3

Staggering spelly.

One of the few stats Port would break even in over their history.

And Norwood mirror Ports win/loss record in that regard. So does North and West Torrens.

That was the last final that this has happened in. There have been 11 finals matches, but only three since 1945 - the 1945 1st Semi, the 1982 Preliminary and the 1990 Grand Final.

The last season that there have been no matches of this sort was in 2001. In 1927 there were 6 matches - the most.
