Helmets in cricket

Postby Alaska » Mon Dec 17, 2007 10:02 am

I have this year seen three people hit in the head playing in the D Grade. The first, a very capable youngster from Happy Valley to a very slow bowler chipping his tooth. The second Benny Thomas trying to hit it out of the park and on Saturday a number 8 taking a swing. :(

All of these preventable.

I notice in C and D grade there are less people wearing a helmet than in A grade. :?

After that nasty injury Craig Thomas suffered a couple of years back wicket keeping I would of thought more thought than bravado would have been the go.

Fataberton I notice your team are mostly older yet only one I think, No 11 wearing a helmet.
The smartest of the lot. I understand that perhaps they grew up without using one but they are not getting better. Even Pud at 49 now wears one.

TWE the D grade hit up 271 on Crafers off 35 overs with Lighty finishing off nicely with a very quick 47 at the end. We went through them fairly quickly spreading the wickets with Jack Gardner and Jarrad Enright bowling very well. A few weeks ago we had 4 bowlers in the team and this week we had 9.

How did young Jack Rowe bat? Looking the goods and providing some depth for the Valley at the tender age of 20. He failed in Association U21's but Hills still beat Torrens by 40 or so runs.

TWE. You'll have to get stuck into chippers and ray about their dismissals... Both leg glances down the leg side straight to the keeper! was hilarious stuff. Zee bowled well with good pace and swing. His run up has most batsmen beaten mentally before hes even bowled the ball

Rowey looked like the only one who was gonna score. Was solid in defence and Still played his shots and did look quite good. Top bloke too! Donuts was looking good to but was unlucky to clobber a pull shot straight to a fielder.

Interesting run into the finals after xmas. 5 or so teams vying for 3 spots

Two tons to Westleys in two weeks. Both as unlikely as each other.

btw - for the record Phil was dismissed for 5 this week as SCIB D-grade rolled us easily...

True - It is tough when you never wore one as a kid though to get used to it - I have a helmet and might wear it when playing B's as I sometimes do, but in all honesty, i fell as though I'm more likely to be hit with a lid on!

Colin is relatively new to the game though and should probably be wearing one. Then again, D-grade is supposed to be bouncer-free - although Layton did let a few go on Saturday (accidentally I think).

Fair attack you have there for D-grade btw.

bit ordinary, played there in the final last year, if you bowl short it sits up but it can jag up off a good length also, not unlike a green top turf pitch, talking to a guy from the SCA and the council down South is converting all their pitches to the same as Valleys

a very underprepared turf pitch.Good for the bowlers but wouldnt like to be batting there every other game. From all accounts cost a fortune too.HCA should not be playing finals there.

They play summer night footy there beginning in late Jan so I think that was the reason they put in it, they play footy over it without covering cause its rubbery, still would like to be tackled into it

Thanks for the info on Brad on another thread Dutchy.
Was a bit surprised to see him making runs but not taking wickets, it always used to be the other way around... he would bat about 10 and open the bowling for us..
What kind of standard is A3 that he is playing in?
For the others on this forum,, have you heard about Valleys returning to the SCA ?

The rumour about Valleys returning to SCA has been on the agenda for many seasons now so I guess seeing is believing.

Heard that one of the reasons they were considering the shift was because they are struggling to recruit junior teams as it is too much of a hassle/rush for parents/children on Saturday mornings to get to say Uraidla or Basket Range for the games. Thats a fair resaon to do so but it could also be the reason for the senior sides to pull out as well.

I am not sure that there would be too many complaints from others if they dropped out of the comp espicially as the standard of the wicket at the HV Oval is frequently discussed.

TDU their juniors are already playing in the SCA, only senior teams play in the HCA...might solve a problem if Mylor seriously want to go up to A grade next year

from the chats Ive had with the Valley guys they all seem to enjoy playing in the HCA, but can understand the travel might become a drag but then again they are as close to Stirling, Bridgewater, Heathfield, Aldgate, Ironbank as they are to Noarlunga
