What can they do? Does the SACA enforce zoning? Should the neighbouring clubs be disadvantaged because they have maintained strong junior presence for a prolonged period of time.
You can't really have a dig at Port getting some imports, they basically had their doors almost closed upon them and needed to act quick and smart, they've now got themselves some silverware, their lower grades are improving and I'm sure they will keep doing what they can to improve their junior presence.

Agree 100%
Zones need to either be enforced completely or abandoned.
The rules as they are presently are like being half pregnant. There are zones but you can also play for a neighbouring club if you want. Naturally in a small city like Adelaide where you are only 10 minutes drive from everything then kids/families will gravitate to clubs that are regarded as stronger.
Get rid of zones altogether and then there is more flexibility. At the clubs with really strong junior there would be players in the Whites or even missing selection altogether that still go alright and could end up being a good cricketer. It might actually benefit a kid who is U/14 to be the 5th kid picked at Port rather than the 20th kid picked at Sturt. Would get more opportunities, bat higher, play a higher grade etc. Getting rid of zones would provide more flexibility.

Both of the Sayers boys played juniors at Port. Only moving when the old man didtigerfan11 wrote:I’m interested in knowing exactly which of these premiership players was an under /14 or 16 for port. I have weeks, Aussie, Reynolds, carter... not sure on Thomas, chatto (NT??) or McDonald. BENTON / dalgiesh / Kerr / sayers recruits. That’s only 35-50% of own juniors players. Kartas would have been a good in to play in this game, after getting a 100 on the Saturday.
I believe the 80/20 rule should apply to filling clubs 1st grade 11 each game... so maximum of 3 recruits outside of your club junior/country program per side. Uni should be required to go back to the original philosophy of Students of AU... but can still have 3 x non students/recruits per game. Which teams would fit this model today? Off the top of my head, most 11s would have the following non jnrs/ country zone:
Southerns (2-3 non juniors) - comack / mansale / ???
Glenelg (0??) maybe a DLCA or 2, but don’t know...
West Torrens (0??)
Sturt (3) - Dick / Sth African (name too hard) / Woods
Adelaide (0??) a DLCA or 2??
Kensington (3-4) - hose / white / Ross?? ACT / Frankie
Ttg (4-5) - gatting / Somerfield/ Hutchinson/ Page / Atkinson
Port (5-6) - as above
Uni (11 haha, but question is how many non student of AU, safe to say 6-8)
Woodville (3-4) - Neilson / Andrews / DICKMAN / DLCA???
Prospect (5-6) miller / McGreg-Baptist/ Cameron / DLCA / keen / cook??
Northerners - (2-3) Agnew / DLCA ?? / NZ bloke
East Torrens - (1-2) Zampa / DLCA?? Bit hard to recruit when no one likes playing with half the team
Be interesting to see if the all powerful SA premier cricket Comittee that is full of individual agendas would consider this. Montitoring it could’ve be given to a SACA comps rep, and clubs can report others to be checked...

Looks like people love to connect University, West Beach & juniors. Far as I'm aware Adelaide are 1 year into a multi year lease to play juniors at West Beach.Tony Clifton wrote:The Hound wrote:The zone question will be interesting if informal discussions regarding Uni and Port combining juniors is happening. Are people jumping at shadows? There were rumours like this last year when the merger was on the cards and the West Beach development was happening. From memory though this was categorically denied by AUCC. Pretty sure there was something on their website refuting the rumour. Will try to dig it up

With strong junior clubs in Adelaide, West Torrens and Glenelg all circling the newly built Uni cricket grounds at West Beach - I'm not sure what adding another district junior cricket club in that area provides South Australian cricket. Hence the SACA trying to get rid of West Torrens a couple of years ago.
Well done to Port Adelaide on the One Day Cup win. Their A Grade team is certainly a lot stronger now and has been for a decade or so.
Instead of looking critically at what they have had to do to be competitive at A Grade level, perhaps they should be assisted (along with Northerns, Woodville and Southerns) in getting more kids involved in playing cricket who might otherwise not be able to afford to do so.
