2011 Imparja , so Cup

Postby Phantom Gossiper » Tue Feb 08, 2011 9:20 pm

I know a few people are interested in the progress of the SA side competing in the Imparja cup this year, so ill post results on here and give a brief run down.

First of all, the touring squad is as follows:

Peter Thomas (c)
Dominic Croft (vc)
Matthew Bedgegood
Jordan Charles
Ethan Ericson
Peter Graham
Ken Karpany
Luke Lavender
Jamie McCafferty
Marcus McGregor Cassady
Chris Schilling
Willie Serle
Raymond Smith

Its important to note as well that this side consists of 3x 14 year olds, 1x 16 year old, 2x 17 year olds and a 19 year old, so all in all a very young side, and majority playing in their first carnival.

GAME 1 VS TASMANIA
Captain Pete Thomas lost the toss, and SA were sent in to bat on a difficult batting wicket, and a very slow ground at Traegar Park, which has received plenty of rain over the past week.

Openers Jamie McCafferty and Ken Karpany worked hard against the new ball, as we struggled to adapt to the condtitions, and progressed the score to 26 before Karpany was out caught behind for 18 off 16 balls.

The struggling McCafferty departed soon after for 6 off 27 balls!

This triggered a mini collapse with the middle order all falling cheaply and SA were in strife at 4/44.

When Jordan Charles was out not long after, number 3 Dominic Croft was joined by Willie "Im Jacques Kallis" Serle with only about 3 overs remaining and the score a paltry 65.

Serle didnt disappoint, smashing a scintillating 29 off 11 balls including 3x 6s and 2x 4s and boosting the score to a defendable 98 off the 20 overs.

Croft was out on the last ball for 26 off 40 balls.

TAS set to work on the target and progressed to 20 with out loss after 4 overs, when Pete Thomas turned to spin and it paid dividends, with Matt Bedgegood's first ball claiming one of the TAS openers.

Pete Thomas and Matt Bedgegood then tied the TAS batsmen down with some tidy spin bowling and when Bedgegood caught Lamont off Thomas' bowling, the TAS side was starting to feel the pinch.

Willie Serle put the icing on the cake late bowling the big hitting TAS number 4, and SA secured their 1st win by 13 runs.

SA 6/98 (Serle 29[11], Croft 26[40]) d TAS 3/85 (Bedgegood 1/14, Thomas 1/14, Serle 1/18)

GAME 2 VS QUEENSLAND

After only a 55min break between games, we fronted up for the QLD game. Pete Thomas won the toss and elected to bat, looking to post a large total on what looked to be a belter of a wicket at Albrecht Oval.

Things began horribly, McCafferty chased a wide one and was caught behind for a duck.

Dom Croft then came in and after blocking the first couple ball, he let one go through to the keeper, but lazily dawdled outside his crease and the keeper threw the stumps down. Out for a duck and the score 2/0 off the 1st over.

Pete Thomas and Ken Karpany tried to build the score back up but both fell soon after - Thomas out stumped trying to reverse sweep

Marcus McGregor scratched around for 6, Jordan Charles 7 and then Ray Smith fell for only 1.

SA in massive trouble at 7/52 off 16 overs

Enter Willie "Im Jacques Kallis" Serle, supported by Matt Bedgegood. Serle quite simply disrespected the bowling, no other way to put it.

All Bedgegood was required to do was turn the strike over, and Serle did the rest, demolishing the bowling to finish on 49* off 23 balls which including 5x 6s. in a partnership of 53 off just 4 overs!

SA scraped to 7/106 off 20 overs.

QLD started on the total, and a tired looking SA outfitted struggled to bowl solid areas and fielding was getting sloppy.

I solid spell from Jamie McCafferty who snagged 2 wickets and Pete Thomas who got an early one slowed the QLD side down and soon enough i think 13 overs were down and they were started to struggle at around 3/60 odd i think.

Opener Ray Smith was brought back on to try and break into the middle order and looked to have success with his 2nd ball, the QLD batsman mis-timing a pull shot to square leg. Unfortunately one of the young fellas dropped the catch and the bloke was given a life. He was on around 12-15. That was the moment the game was over.

Next two balls went for 6 and then a couple of doubles, then a single. Next over Matt Bedgegood copped the brunt, 1st ball edged past leg stump for a double, then dispatched for a couple of 6s and a 4 before dropping a caught and bowled chance on the same batsman last ball of the over and his figures blew out to 0/21 off 3.

Ray Smith managed to almost complete his next over, as the bloke continued to smack maximums and brought up his 50 on the 4th ball of the over with a 6, before winning the game with another massive blow over long on. Game over after 16.5 overs. Smith 2.5 overs 0/30!

Some very very big clean hitting i must say!

Pete will be lucky to get on the field to sub field let alone play. He came on for a few overs today against QLD and was just awful, spectating, lazy, just awful.

Off the field though, he is trying to chat up every chick he sees  quite disturbing, him staring girls down and then putting the moves on!

GAME 3 VS WESTERN AUS

Today was a vital day for the SA side, needing to win both games against two undefeated sides to stay in the hunt for the final.
WA was 1st up and Pete Thomas won the toss and sent the Sandgropers in.

Willie Serle - looking to back up his amazing efforts from day 1 took the new ball and didn't disappoint, tearing through the top order to have the WA side 2/5 early on.

Number 4 batsman Julien Feehan looked scratchy early and the SA side felt if they could snag another quick one they would be well in control. However with Keren Ugle, WA wrestled back some control of the game, taking the total to 45 before Bedgegood had Ugle caught.

McCafferty from the other end then bowled tight and forced the errors, picking up 2 wickets and the SA boys were right on top at 5/77.

Unfortunately as has been the case so far this week, the boys dropped off the boil and allowed WA to pull away, finishing their innings at 6/118 - probably below par for the ground.

SA full of confidence began work on the total, with young Jordan Charles moving up to open the batting, replacing the out of sorts McCafferty. Charles and Karpany progressed the score to 49 before Charles pushed one back to the bowler and was out for 14 [31].

WA brought on the slower bowlers and tied down the batsman, forcing the run rate up each ball.

Came down to 13 off the last over to win, Pete Thomas cracked a big ball to square leg, but an amazing piece of fielding from WA not only stopped the 6, but forced a run out. Thomas smacked a 6 2nd to last ball to give a faint bit of hope but it wasnt to be, SA finishing on 6/113 - a loss of 5 runs.

GAME 4 VS NSW
Game 4 and against a strong NSW outfit and the attitude around the boys and the enthusiasm was lacking from the get go.

Pete Thomas won the toss and elected to bat, NSW bowled tight lines and tied our batsman down, constantly losing wickets while not making to many runs.

SA finished up on 7/64 off our 20 overs. Pete Thomas 23 [36] and Ken Karpany 18 [20] were the only batsman to make double figures.

NSW made light work of the total, SA opened with spin and Bedgegood was smashed to all parts, getting taken for 25 off 2 overs including 3 massive bombs.

NSW passed the total 1 down after 7 overs.

GAME 5 VS VICTORIA
Considering we were out of the race for the final, our last 3 games were going to be about giving some of the younger kids a go, but still trying to get 3 more wins to finish the week strong.

We played Victoria and bowled 1st, its one of the better bowling displays we have had all week, bowling in good partnerships and areas to keep the Vics under the pump.

Jamie McCafferty over the middle overs proved more than handy, as the Vics tried to get him away without success. McCafferty finished with 4 overs 4/24.

A couple of late wickets to Matt Bedgegood ensured VIC didnt get away, finishing on 8/109 after their 20 overs.

As has been the case all week, our batting has let us down, losing regular wickets and no one going on with a start. In the end time got the better of us, finishing up 7/99.

A very very disappointing result, and a win that we gave away ourselves through ordinary batting.

VIC 8/109 (McCafferty 4/24, Bedgegood 2/2) d SA 7/99 (Croft 16 [24], McCafferty 15* [18]
