What is your definition of grass roots footy?

Postby barbs » Sat Feb 04, 2006 12:45 am

I hear various levels of football being called grass roots football. What do you consider grass roots football and why? Is it the local league is it the local club or is it an excuse to to relate to a local area?

Well thats what I would say but using the above definition you cant call the Ameture league grass roots.

And player payments are not just in the first couple of divs, theres plenty of that going down as far as div 5 or maybe even 6.

In my opinion anything or anyone involved below SANFL level.

Almost throw-up when I hear of Power and Crows supporters, ie those that sit in the outer at Footy Park, being described as "grassroots supporters", which seems to happen in the media on occasions.

I agree with the definition of grassroots SA footy as being below SANFL level.

Here in Perth, it would be anything below the WAFL.

The one that shits me is Victoria. I lived there for many years and the VFL (ex-VFA) used to promote themselves heavily as grassroots footy ... it made me want to hurl big time because clubs had been annexed and turned into feeder clubs. Their true definition is anything below AFL and VFL level. Before 1996 when the VFA was taken over, they would have been rightly classed as grassroots.

The other states would be any competition due to the standards and player quality, apart from the Sydney Swans Reserves in the Canberra comp.

Real grass roots is the Junior leagues and lower SAAFL comps and all country grades. Men & women, mums & dads giving their time and quite often their money to keep their club going so Jimmy can have a kick with his mates.
