Psyber, when you were having those convos back in the 50's & 60's did it occur to you that Aboriginal people couldn't vote at that time? We've moved on a fair way since then.
What's that got to do with a conversation about the etymology of the word and whether it is sexist?
Are you suggesting our aboriginal friends would have voted against the use of that word in that way if they could have then? ;)
(Or just looking for a winning stroke in favour of moral outrage after the previous one fell over?)

But I'll answer you. Yes, I was aware of that back then, even though I was only 10 in 1953.
I voted to rectify it when the opportunity was first offered.

Classy.

TONY Abbott claims it "never happened" but Barbara Ramjan says she will never forget the day he punched the wall on either side of her head to "intimidate" her at university.

Ms Ramjan, who now sits on the Legal Aid board of NSW and is a former member of the Immigration Review Tribunal, maintains she was menaced by Mr Abbott in 1977.

The allegations are published for the first time in a new Quarterly Essay by David Marr: Political Animal: The Making of Tony Abbott.

Ms Ramjan told The Sunday Telegraph she had expected Mr Abbott to congratulate her after she won Sydney University's student presidency.

Instead, she claims he came within an inch of her nose and then punched the wall on either side of her head.

"Not only do I have a recollection. It's the one thing that has always stuck in my mind about him. I didn't expect what he did."

Ms Ramjan said she had told friends the story for 35 years. "When people ask me what he was like it is the one thing I always remember.

"That's exactly what he did. I can only assume it was a little bit of intimidation. Of course, it wasn't appropriate."

It was very poor behaviour, Gozu, if true, but hopefully, Tony Abbot has grown up a lot since then.
He doesn't seem to "lose it " with the annoying media very often now.

But the 1972 incident sounds like self defence.

The Abbott incident sounds like outright intimidation.

In saying that, it was a long time ago, and whilst I'm not a huge fan of Abbott, its not overly relevant. If it happened in more recent times as well, then that would make it more of an issue.

I agree with you entirely.
My point is that events in the distant past are not relevant to who someone is now.
(And of course my report of my 1972 incident was my version - who knows what he other party would describe.)

Here I was thinking you were a centenarian, Psyb ;)

I remember the Lib shills in the media trying to make a big deal out of Latham's 'past history' when he was leader of the Opposition too.

I think they did a bit, but IIRC it was a more consistent pattern with Latham.
However, it was his political and economic record that scared me when I was on the brink of voting ALP that year until he became leader.

I don't know I'd think Abbott has a more 'colourful' history than Latham did.

Without upsetting Jimmy are we allowed to talk about the time Abbott decked Joe Hockey? ;)

I followed him down a corridor in Parliament House not long ago and he is a very strong intimidating man even in a business suit. When he eyeballs you you know you are dealing with something out of the ordinary. I think Keating had the same aura.

Yeah his past history suggests he kinda gets off on intimidating people I don't think Keating had a boxing background though so with Abbott people already know he can look after himself too.

Keating's background was winding antique clocks and breeding pigs I think. His strength was his intelligence and huge ego
