After watching Abbott announce his ministers it is apparent this bloke will not see out 12 months as leader of the national/liberal party.

I'd be surprised if anyone in the Libs pulled a coup - that is an ALP thing - and, as demonstrated recently, it doesn't go over well with the voters.
Tony Abbot may even stay on beyond the first term, and he may prove himself as not as extremely right wing as the more left orientated on this site make him out to be.
(Demonising the opponent is a political trick used by all politicians and their devotees.)

There were quite a few Liberal leader changes in opposition, as there have been in other parties.
I don't recall a change occurring when in power other than the purely local one in SA when John Olsen took over from Dean Brown.
(Feel free to remind me if I've forgotten one.)

The first leader after a loss rarely lasts long in any party, which is why the notables in the ALP haven't rushed to put their hands up now.

I am not, overall, a Tony Abbot fan, as I've said before - at least not since 2004.
I am concerned about his religious orientation and his overall conservatism, and I don't like his parental leave scheme.
(Then I don't support any paid parental leave scheme.)

I am more comfortable with Malcolm Turnbull, but was bothered by his going along with the proposed Emission Trading Scheme.
I don't see much point in any scheme that allows producers to pay more money to move pollution output elsewhere, rather than cut emissions directly and locally.

I like the words of former Prime Minister Hawke.
Asked what kind of leader Mr Abbott would make Mr Hawke replied in one word "TEMPORARY" :D

All Prime Ministers are temporary - some just last longer than others.
Keating got tough and organised a coup when Hawke resisted being temporary.
Costello got out instead of running a coup when Howard did the same.

The voters didnt vote Tony in...they voted labour out!
I think he will be temporary as well...takes him 10 minutes to make a 3 minute speech.

You should be used to that considering his predecessor
Abbott chooses his word very carefully
Rudd just talked and talked and talked and talked and talked.......... with no money shot

Abbott will see a full term, barring any disastrous opinion polls in the third year.

I agree, subject to Aboott not getting caught with his pants down in some strip joint
They are fully aware that the Rudd - Gillard situation was one of the most telling factors for their win

Not sure I understand why so many are trying to label Tony as Sexist over this.
The Labor party is way more sexist than Tony Abbott.

Tony's marriage policy legislated that 50% of all members in every marriage be women. That labor party wanted to reduce that minimum requirement to 0%!

1971. John Gorton was ousted by Billy McMahon. The vote was deadlocked and Gorton voted himself out. Putting Billy McMahon up against Whitlam...that was a winning move.
It almost happened in 2006 but Peter Costello is an invertebrate. ;)

If "invertebrate" means you wont stab your boss in the back and destabilise the party for your own selfish aims and ego, then so be it, but he is a far better person than Keating, Rudd or Gillard. He could have walked into the job after the election but didn't, saying the Liberal party needed to rejuvenate, unlike Rudd who will sit there like a festering sore until next time his ego takes control again. At least Gillard had the decency to quit. Calling him that reflects more on you LL

If Costello had have replaced Howard a year or two before the election and took the Coalition into the 2007 ballot he would have stitched Rudd up and made him look the fraud that he really is and won the bloody thing. Think of the billions we could saved. Makes me very angry.

Love the delusions of some of the right-wingers on here, um WorkChoices? Costello like Howard would've been smashed.

He got his own back on the party for refusing to back his attempts at knifing Howard by knocking back the Lib leadership in opposition.
