its hard for sure. i dont think claims on the land 1400 years ago are especially relevant here though. 70 years ago? more relevant.

I think most people (but the most hardcore supporters on each side) believe that a two state solution is the way to go. The problem is Israel dont see this as an option. i guess thats their right, but it doesnt make it right either.

if anyone solves this issue they are a genius.

I don't think either the Israeli hard-liners or the Muslim hard-liners like Hamas can be regarded as remotely likely to stick to any truce that is negotiated, unless some third party occupies he land between them and keeps them apart, despite any good will in the generality of the populations.

In my view no one side of this conflict is entirely right or entirely wrong.

You have to agree it is generally Israel that are the ones putting pressure on, not the other way round. Resettlements etc. doesn't mean Palestinians are in the right, but I would think of the orders were drawn at the current places and Israel didn't do anything after that the violence would die straight away.

Whether they have legitimate claim to the land occupied by the Palestine is a different matter and where it gets complex obviously

Hard to see any possible resolution, the stuff up was made at the end of WW2 and will never be fixed.
Should never have given a religion their own state especially in the middle east and on other peoples land.
At least the catholic state is in a fairly friendly area and doesn't take up much room.

The Israelis may argue that it was their land before the Muslims invaded and took it. Back in the late 1970s I met an attractive young woman at an Adelaide party and we got on well and left the party together. It turned out she was then, she said, a Sergeant in the Israeli army and was here visiting her father who was a Nuclear Physicist at the University of Adelaide. She took that line to justify israel's position with its neighbours...

About a week later I was with her at her father's place in Adelaide for breakfast when she said, "Dad I've been instructed to advise you that there are unlimited funds for your nuclear research available at home in Israel." I thought then "Did she say she was army or Mosad?" but didn't raise the question. A month later she went home and her father followed soon after.

For some reason, I reckon Mossad agents would really go off in the sack.

The story was meant to point out there are different points of view and that Israelis may well consider themselves to have previous claim on the land given that Islam emerged only about 600AD, much later even than even Christianity...

The rest of it was adding context to the age of the perspective, and an amusing sideline about how it did make me feel a little uneasy at the time.
