Country footy is all about junior, senior colts and Two's before the A's on a Saturday arvo in a parallel competition with netball. Frig around with that massively successful formula that has worked since Moses played full back for Jerusalem and you are flirting with danger.
If you dont believe me check out the SGFL. A good crowd on Sunday is 200. A good crowd on Saturday is 210. They stuffed up when incompetence got in the way of common sense and they took footy away from Globe Oval (Sollies hallowed turf) and Ports Oval (the Squids holy ground) and based it all at Memorial Oval (the Lions HQ). Complete failure which is repeated in Port Augusta. SGL also boned one of the better clubs in Quorn Wolves because they insisted on playing a couple of games at home on a Saturday - shocking idea! They no longer exist. No netball either. Its a mess.
APFL is a good strong competition so you blokes should try and preserve it as is.

Very interesting comment DV. I have not heard before of what happened at the SGL. What were they trying to do and what was the outcome? Did they put all resources into one venue and then have shared tennants? Could you go into some more detail please.

there's three clubs in each town. each club has its own oval and facilitites and at least two have pokies so the set up in each case is pretty good. But several years ago the SGL movers and shakers decided to take footy away from the grass roots and just have one ground in each twon where they play all games and finals. It is pathetic really and they are paying the price. Also, I think this right, but they play their junior and senior colts after school o friday's so all you get on Saturdays is Magoos and A's

There's three

The last time Globe Oval etc was used for games was well before the 90's, probably the 60's! All 4 of the original clubs in Pirie had their own training ovals etc. I think PA is the same. When Dad first moved into town he found it strange to have clubrooms in suburbia , nowhere near the oval (except Proprietary at Memorial Oval, 1 half of the Lions.) I think it detracts from the social side of things and the netball etc would be nice too! :-" The Under 18s have played with the Senior grades since the 90's. Under 15s and below come under the towns own jurisdiction and do not come up against Port Augusta colts. U 15s play wednesday nights. I think in Port Augusta they play friday nights?? lots of problems squeezing U9s,11s,13s,15s into the days the Under 18s and Senior grades play as you could imagine. Yes, I agree it is far from ideal and some changes are needed to fix the league up a bit but different town, different circumstances. Remember the system was set up 50 years ago when the SGL had Whyalla in it as well. Couldnt imagine the family setting off for Whyalla with U9s and up (and netball) all on the same day, especially sundays!Getting back to Adelaide Plains ( =D> ,night football is a good spectacle and for us it fits OK.(We dont play the Pt Augusta teams at night). I think if you look on Sporting Pulse you will find the crowd numbers are 3-4 times above DVs numbers.

I asked around today and none could recall any SGL played at Globe or Port ovals in recent times - I would agree with the Cella Dwella - as far back as the mid-60's I reckon (if then) since SGL games haven't always been at the one oval.

Globe certainly was used for U/18s - think these are now played inter-town and follow the League and Reserves.

Anyway back to APFL - last season there certainly were talks around a Two Wells/Mallala game under lights at the Mallala oval under their new lights. It was discussed around playing the very first game of the season under lights, but as the installation was late, it never eventuated.

Yes, at ETSA oval. Which is a smaller ground (great for U/15's) and is at the same venue as Central's footy club. Port's & Centrals have tried to football at their own ovals.
Winning isn't everything, it's the only thing.

Good numbers coming out to Balak trainings this week.
Mostly young blokes under the age of 23, with the exception of Grant Wilmer, who still leads most endurance running exercises.
Aaron Cox has impressed me, while Glenn Dawson trained well and looks in good nick.
There's a number of young rookies I think will push for selection throughout the year.
Really like the look of Ryan McPharlin and Sam Rowland, while Lachie Michael also looks the goods.
I think that's what I'm most excited about this year, seeing these lads take that next step into senior footy.

Not aerobically yet. Working hard on eating salad and staying clear of the Royal Hotel as often as possible. Got another 5 or 6 kilo to lose.
There is a young lad we're calling "Wheats" on the track, so I'm guessing that's him.

McPharlin and Rowland were good kids in the APFL u-17's at Kadina last year so a full year of A grade will set them up nicely won't it?
Caution! You are now entering the no-spin zone...
