I did hear that. Let's just say no official salary cap this year. The Salary cap over the past few seasons was a bit of a laughing stock anyhow. By getting ride of the salary cap this year all it will do is allow clubs to stop playing players behind closed doors. Several blokes were getting paid extra in their wages if employed by someone at a club so then the footy club didn't have to declare the whole amount they were playing the player.
Might get rid of a few hidden envelopes for players.

I know of one prominent country club that beat the salary cap by paying certain players in hay bales, sheep and/or cattle on the hoof and even transactions of several tonnes of super phosphate.

The list just goes on and on. Oh well, no need to worry about that any more.

Any newas on what's happening at the Cougars this coming season? Have only heard rumours that they have signed 4 from Eastern park Div 1 (Div 2 in 2012) amateur league. One of them is a bloke by name of Gatto who was about 6th in div 1 medal. Cougars did approach the league about getting extra points and were knocked back. Any Info?

Yeah they have 3from eastern park, all very handy and all ex A1 team of the yr players and the 2 lads from last yr have also resigned I think (millar and Daniels). Apparently they also have 4 or 5 very handy local boys back. Hadn't heard they had applied for extra points? Can u do that in the yp league?

I was talking to a bloke from the CMS crows and he reckons they had Millar. If cougars have got the 3 from eastern park and a few locals coming back it could make it quite interesting. daniels would be a local. Be interesting if Ben Gunning decided to go back home as well.
Not sure if you can get extra points but was told they applied and got knocked back. They used the situation of not winning a game in 2011. Actually got belted most weeks. The season before they only won a couple games.
Would have been interesting at their club meetings. They are in process of plans for a new club house at the oval and sold their old cougar cave in the main street. Question would be, do we spend the money on the club or buy players or both. Looks like they have gone for both. Using one of the pavillion sheds at the showgrounds next to the oval as their club room for the coming season.
I would have thought the best thing they could have done was relocate back to Arthurton where they would only have to spend a lot less $ doing up the changeroom. They have a brand new clubhouse there and the oval is pretty good. Only problem with this idea is too many politics between the Maitland and Arthurton people.

nope, Millar is definately signed sealed and delivered. CMS tried hard apparently tho. haha u r opening up a can of worms there OTC! the funds raised for the new building are completely independent to the general running of the football club apparently, money has been raised for the previous 4 seasons and plus the sale of the club in the main street have quite an amount saved up independently. The Arthurton/ Maitland rivalry has almost gone with all of the harder older heads from both clubs slowly disappearing. The reason the club stopped playing at Arthurton was due to the fact that there was no clubrooms up there, and all patrons went to the pub after and then home. Was basically like an extra 4 away games each year and were losing too much money. The building up at Arthurton currently is for the war memorial trust, basketball, cricket and tennis clubs. the cougars would never receive any of the profits from there either. am lead to believe they tried to look at playing games back there the last few year, however the war memorial and cricket clubs wouldnt allow them to use it due to the newly installed turf pitch. Most of the local boys playing there are from maitland now anyway so i am told, wouldnt be many from arthurton. all of this info comes from members of their committee

Couple of blokes at Bute bowling club reckon the footy club is on the verge of two big signings from somewhere in the APFL and one from either Gaza or Broadview.

Millar will be a lot more benefit to the Cougars this year then if they have some quality players from Eastern Park with him. He was a bit like a fish out of water last year. Can play but wasn't able to show his true potential as he only had 3 or 4 to help him out. Not trying to open a can of worms but mind you I reckon it would be a very big can. Haha. There is still a bit of feeling about the Maitland/Arthurton joint venture but as you said, it's slowly disappearing. Arthurton spent a lot of money at the club and I didn't realise the cougars wouldn't receive any money if it was played there. Will be interesting to see what happens in the coming years. The lower grades have heaps of numbers to the point where many kids are missing out on games. The hard part like any country club is keeping them at the club from 16 yr old and above or getting them to return.
Cougars must have been recruiting other outside players as well if they needed to go to the league to ask for more points. 3 x new players = 9 points plus Millar who would be 2 points. I think each club can have 15 so there must have been others they were talking to.

3 eastern park boys - 9, matt Daniels and Zac millar both 2 from last yr so is total of 13. I assume they must have asked for 1 more point to make 16 to get another outsider

Played at Jamestown last season. Believe he was runner up in the medal. Played association. Very solid player.
