Whilst the umpires don’t help themselves, they are going to get things wrong. Balaklava and Two wells were disgusting. Swearing at an umpire is not on. Also there are young kids in the crowd that hear fowl mouth footballers. I think something has to be done about the language on the field.

Agreed - Vs Two Wells last fortnight it was the worst i had heard Two Wells. Pretty poor. Not saying United were good but they were much better.

In BLGFA a family friends son was sent from the oval for swearing at the umpire. Wouldnt mind seeing that in the Plains. As much as i hate the card system it might work?!?!

The APFL is too close to town. Ex-Players don't seem to progress to umpiring now and rather we get young lads and try to develop them. The pathetic set payments don't help. The Peter Kitsche model works for me. Well done to those who give it a go and lets hope some club cultures eventually weed out the people and players who get off on showering abuse. As for the umpires now, I hope they're brave enough to dish out 25M for every expletive, whether from Player/Supporter (or goal umpire  ) until people get the message

Remember,no umpires no game, simple,i will watch to see how many here take up umpiring or anything when they stop playing,0%

I would like to give it a go. I reckon I would go alright. I wouldn't pay any free kicks to Nocyrils.

Bear in mind we have blokes on $150000+ umpiring in the AFL and they still sometimes get it wrong. We can't ask for better from our country and suburban umps! It certainly hasn't been atrocious by any measure.
On swapping umpires between leagues, the problem you have is they often bring different interpretations to a game, which frustrates the hell out of players. It has merit if everyone's on the same page though.
In general, no-one is going to want to get into umpiring as a junior or past player if they see that the umps cop that much crap that it's not worth it. Any abuse towards an umpire should be an instant yellow card. Cut crook if you like, but don't directly abuse them and eventually numbers will grow. With more numbers comes greater depth and then better standards...........problem solvered!

It has been acceptable. I just think is has been better in recent seasons.

Ex-Player umps

Andy Seccafein, Two Wells
Doug Searle, United & Pt Wakefield

Some of the best APFL umps of days gone by were ex-players who retired early due to injury.

Sam Dunstan, Moo Smith, even Hank Lamond was consistent

No word from Barnett on that yet. I'm assuming he will let me know at some stage.

Should update the tipping comp today. When I can be bothered. Here's some interesting jazz.

Hamley Bridge have the full allocation of 15 points this year + bonus/contingency points etc.

If the Bombers win 11 matches this year, they will still be under the 15 point barrier for 2014.

If they win 12 matches, they lose a point to 14 points. If they go through the rest of the season undefeated, it will drop to 13 points.

Balaklava's solid three years previously mean if the Peckers win eight games, they lose a point and drop to eight points. It would take a fair bit to go any further up or down from there.

Hummocks can win up to 14 games and still retain a 10-point recruit cap. Two to three wins will mean 14 points, four to six wins 13 points, seven to nine wins 12 points and 10 to 12 will result in 11 player points.

Mallala can win between 11 and 14 games and stay at the 8-point cap. 10 wins will net the Magpies 9 points, while they would need to lose all remaining games to grab a 10th recruit point.

Two Wells will go down from 12 to 10 points if they win between 10 and 13 matches. Nine wins will give them 11 points for next year, while four to six wins will retain the current 12 point allocation.

United will receive 15 points next year if they win three or four games. Five to seven wins will mean 14 points, 11 wins will result in 13 points, and 12 wins will mean 12 points.

If Virginia win no or one more game/s this year, they will get 10 points next year. Five to 10 wins will retain a 9-point allocation, with 11 to 14 wins creeping into 8-point territory.
