What I do like about the whole thing is that given the financial position the magpies are in, would rather spend money on things that would benefit the community rather than blowing it on a few money-hungry recruits. IMHO that is why this league has been such a great "country" league for so long as opposed to the Barossa league and leagues in the SE that blow rediculous money just to get a high-profile player that couldnt really give a stuff about the club itself   I hope for the sake of our league everyone keeps towing the rope in the same direction ;)

I see what your saying old mate. Lights or Burgoyne? We obviously chose Burgoyne ;)
But seriously, you wouldn't be keen on playing night footy at Mallala? I reckon it would be awesome. I can see friday

Moon Unit wrote:Heard a rumour last night Swamp that Mallala are upgrading their lights to SANFL standard. If true, this would be massive for the league. I have always thought that the first club to bite the bullet & spend the big bucks required to do this would benefit greatly both on & off the field. Imagine say Mallala v Two Wells on a friday night. Not only would you get supporters of both clubs there but also people from every other club. I know i would go & watch plus spend quite a bit over the bar...

I understand this very point was put to the Two Wells committee last week after an approach from Mallala - on the surface looks like a top idea - first game of the season on a Friday night - Mallala vs Two Wells.

Just clarifying what your saying Jumbo that, Mallala have approached TW regarding playing a friday night season opener. If thats the case then it would seem certain that night footy will be played at Mallala next season?

Thats correct Moon Unit - a certainty though I am not sure. Would need Mallala, Two Wells, APFL, APNL, players and other stakeholders to all agree on format etc. But like I said - on the surface it looks like a good idea.

how would a friday night game work? pay to go to the game on friday & then on saturday - or one ticket does both?
makes it hard for opposition teams, who wants to travel on both days?

but i could see it working on a saturday night & playing a twilight/night game in the a's.
just meaning that all the footy games start a bit later in the day.

Yeah Friday night games are great i'll pay that, but at our level Im not so sure yet but def keen to give it a crack. Seems a lot of coin to dish out for not a lot of gain in my opinion.

these are the type of issues that would have to be sorted, my thoughts,

- pay Friday - gets you back in on Saturday
- two wells to Mallala - not that far but certainly something to sort out
- what happens saturday after B grade?
- will saturday be flat with no A grade?
- would the APFL support it?
- are the lights good enough?
- will Two Wells get to train at venue?
- umpires on 2 days - could be good or bad - same 2 umpires could do Fri and Saturday senior footy - they will have to travel twice
- chance for all other sides to come for a look be a positive?
- twilight saturday may work - probably wont get other teams coming for a look

Lots to work through I reckon!

- pay Friday - gets you back in on Saturday - Yep, just as if you go to two games on a Saturday. Pay at first venue get in the next for free.
- two wells to Mallala - not that far but certainly something to sort out
- what happens saturday after B grade?
- will saturday be flat with no A grade?
- would the APFL support it?They should. Anything to promote the league should be given a try.
- are the lights good enough? If not defeats this discussion. ;) I have heard they are going to be up to SANFL/AFL standard. I guess we will see.
- will Two Wells get to train at venue? Why? you play 8 away games all year. Do you ask to train at each ground before you play the said team? :?
- umpires on 2 days - could be good or bad - same 2 umpires could do Fri and Saturday senior footy - they will have to travel twice
- chance for all other sides to come for a look be a positive? Yep
- twilight saturday may work - probably wont get other teams coming for a look This would be the best way to do it IMO.

I'm all for trying something new if it will increase attendances/exposure to the League. I think it would work best if it were on a Saturday night then you may get others dropping in on the way home from footy to watch another game of A Grade. Perhaps the league could schedule a game at Virginia and a game at Long Plains that day so its not so far out of peoples way to drop in. Wouldn't cost them a cent as long as they still have their ticket from entering the gate previously during the day.

And Donkey, you don't have to worry about us not spending any money on our facilities like you're suggesting. We would have spent plenty of money last year on upgrading our facilities and have many projects lined up this year including upgrading of our lights also. Not sure what you were getting at mate.
If you don't like it, change it. If you don't want to change it, it can't be that bad!

I went fishing and my marks were spot on :D
My point was that Mallala have standards in terms of the amount it is willing to pay players even though they are in the financial position to be paying a hell of a lot more and attract big name-little heart players, but don't out of respect to the hard workers around the club who do PLENTY for nothing. It saves a lot of bickering and percieved pressure that I have seen happen elsewhere.

I thought you were talking about facilities! :D

You still going on about that. Get over it Princess!

Since you guys are so good at spending money on facilities mate, how about spending some money on the visitors rooms. You've just stated you are in a financial position to do so! ;)

Is that a personal dig Swamp? Ill have you know that even though I get a pair of shorts under the table every 3 or 4 seasons that is not the reason we cant afford a plasma (or two MC ;) ) in the clubrooms!

Big Griff would be first in line .... he's had a year to settle in to Mallala after the return from the SE and will need to take on a bigger role now that Bruggeman has gone.

Hate to bring up a non-playing coach a few years ago that was on 25k a year at Mallala. How did that work out again? ;)
