I'm pretty sure they dont mind volunteers to help out, maybe you should take the initiative and don an ump top and see how you fare?
With all the abuse and criticism these guys get im surprised we actually still have enough running around to umpire as low as divvy 5.

:ymapplause: Well said groover. Yes we do get average umpires, its division 5 footy. Ours were pretty average on saturday but no use whinging about it. Not having a dig as by the sounds of things the umps were horrible at this particular game, but surely with a div this tight there can be better things to discuss?

Spot on, it is a thankless task, and a hard task at that. And the $$ does not truly represent the task nor the amount of shit you get for doing it. The constant criticism will do nothing more than drive umpires, or potential umpires, away from the game, not make them better.

If you really want to be part of the solution don the orange shirt and introduce yourself to a whistle and pick up the phone and let the SAAFL know that you're prepared to join the umpires ranks, if not shut the **** up about them.

If the umpires made half the mistakes that Div 5 footy players made then EVERY game would be a joke!

I just cant agree with you guys defending the umpires. Where not talking about a few mistakes here. Obvioulsy mistakes are going to happen but it was far and beyond that on the weekend. Players are made accountable for their actions and so too should umpires. 5 of the 6 yellow cards were laughable.

Yeah i agree SS, but at the end of the day, what can players and clubs do about it.....nothing. Like previous posts have said, if nobody likes the standard of umpiring in the div, don an orange shirt and try it yourself.

Im not condoning sending players off for the hell of it, and if they were truly that bad, leave it up to your club to report to the amateur league....

Anywho, 3 days of chat about 5hit umpiring is enough....some cracking games coming up this sat!

Jabber, will you be gracing plympton oval for the triple header this sat? should be some great games in all 3 grades!

Normally I would agree with you Valleys but on this occassion it was beyond belief, I have played 240 games and I have never seen anything like it. It honestly made me question if this is how I want to spend my Saturdays Afternoons if this is what is happening to footy and what could have been a classic game of footy. Having said that, I could probably except it as an extraordinarly bad day for the umpires if they were SAAFL umpires who officiate in our league as in my opinion the SAAFL umpires have been good this year and could have a bad day but these are not SAAFL umpires, they are from another league. It is a disgrace that two non SAAFL umpires were allowed to umpire a SAAFL game, the league should be issueing apologies to both clubs, refunding any money paid to the umpires and rescinding any of the yellow cards issued during the game.
I am dead against league bashing which is popular on here but in this case the SAAFL got it horribly wrong, which could cost one of the teams involved very dearly in such a close league.
I have a problem. It's to do with the little man, the squashed-in French man, the naked little squashed up hairy boy! You know! With the hand feet

I think every game from here on in for every club is hugely important, it's been such a close year and it will be a very interesting month or so.

I wholeheartedly agree boosh, but my point being, nobody will take any notice of what is dribbled on here. If the umps were truly disgraceful, the only way to try and ensure these turkeys dont officiate another game is by reporting to the amateur league.

I agree and I believe North Haven are taking it up with the league, sadly I think the league will take little to no notice.

It would be interesting to see what transpires if plympton make the same complaint.

I don't see the point in making official complaints - the reson that official complaints don't work anymore is because clubs have abused the process, everytime they think an umpire is rubbish they make a complaint, every time they think an umpire costs them the match they make a complaint. Complaint, complaint, complaint! It would be hard to sort out the trash from the actual facts.

I think people need to be a bit mature about things. There's a lot of whinging about umpires. How about you just suck it up and move on to the next contest. Sometimes you get the rub of the green, sometimes you don't. But throwing tanties like school kids about how bad the umpiring was, and how its made players who've played however many games contemplate retirement??? I mean please!

Umpires don't deliberately go out there and say "you know what, I'm going to pay some of the worst decisions today".

But if it gets that bad for you that its ruined your whole week or your month, I don't know, maybe ruined your whole life by the way that some people carry on like pork chops, maybe retirement is probably for you.

I have never bagged the umpires on here and didn't say a word to them on the weekend so I won't take reponsibility for what others have said on here or other clubs that have complained to the league, but just 'sucking it up and moving onto the next contest' isn't going to help the players that will miss games as a result of these absurd yellow cards. So even if it upsets you our club will take it up with the league.

Stated earlier that I didn't think the league would do anything but the club will at least try to put it's case forward for the players sake's.

Correct me if I am wrong Jabber, Umpires are paid for their services on a Saturday Afternoon?
I am sure you would complain if anything you paid for was not up to standard.
They are straight to their word, they don't talk a lot of smoke and mirrors behind windows.

What do you consider "up to standard"? Its 5th Division Ammatuer Footy!

Add SANFL, SANFL Reserves, SANFL Under 18's, then its 8th Division Footy in this state! Not even including country leagues.

So yes I'd say the Umpiring is right "up to standard" with the standard of footy being played. Like it or not!

div 5 umpires have got nothing on div 6 ones..trust me..we just laugh now..or you go crazy..the old guy with no drivers license hes so old but can umpire an A grade game..or the guy who cant run(that actually covers a few of them)..or the potbellied losers guessing decisions from 75m away..we love the umpires!!!..and yes we pay them for this so we can critique them if we want..had one set who gave 3 frees in a first quarter..next game you get 19 frees in the first quarter..
