Why did OSB lose the ground on Galloway Rd? Was it due to the merger with Lonsdale or something to do with soccer?

Was a bit of both, the merger happened first and then over the first few years they moved to their current home as all bar profits went to the club as the club got nothing from the O'Sullivan Beach oval due to the council running it.

Soccer took over. They got people in on the council. We used to get kicked off the oval at 4 during cricket season towards the end as they had games at 5. Synthetic soccer pitch there now where the footy oval once was.

So who enforced the suspension?

What is the story you are breaking here? What happened? I've heard both clubs copped a fine for a melee.

Provision of sporting facilities is based on quantifying the demand. Not enough demand, no supply. Soccer likely solved that equation to the satisfaction of Council.

The other thing is when building new facilities, the majority of the time they're at a cost that is beyond the ratepayer base, so Councils seek funding - most often 50% of the cost of the build. The criteria for that funding is usually along the lines of

The aforementioned demand
Multi use
Alignment to strategic goals - participation, health & wellbeing etc

Where a lot of clubs fall down is the last one. The provision of bar facilities might be great to scrounge up some cash to pay for next year's centre half forward, but that's a uniquely football paradigm, other sports don't have that issue to the same degree at the non professional level, so when other sports submit plans and it doesn't include space for crusty old men to drink piss, ruin their livers, kill their brain cells and talk about the old days, but does have space for...unisex changerooms or a community hub or a ... whatever. Then that's going to be favoured.

Long story short - want a bar to get profits for your player payment budget? Don't ask ratepayers or the office for rec and sport to fund it.

OSB had (jnr and snr) cricket, football, soccer.. from memory used to also hire out the hall for basketball or karate or whatever.

I would've thought there was enough demand around the place, and being utilised.

Correct, which is why a lot of money has been spent there.

But that money isn't meant for bars to generate surplus for player budgets, when it could be used for other things.

You'll find this will be a very common direction now for new sporting facilities.

Out of curiosity how did Brighton, Rostrevor, Hectorville and Goodwood end up with their beautiful new bar facilities on that basis?

Would have to look at the funding models. Could be that others have chipped in.

This is also a relatively new strategy. Wasn't always the case.

Also not a hard and fast "rule" just one that Councils know works best when seeking funding from the Office of Rec and Sport.

More broadly speaking, the boom in quality of facilities across a number of clubs is a fantastic result. Over the course of one generation of footballers the quality of most club's facilities is going to increase ten fold.
