Great work by Sutho to finish forth in the medal count, he's been outstanding this season and should win our B grade B and F quite easily IMO.

Do we all rate the umpires? No...

So why rate the medal in which they pick the votes?

A B&F would be "worth" more

Yes there is, friday night starting from Tolley Rd, then heading up Smart Rd towards Tea Tree Plaza where the Roulettes will do a fly over. I believe the mayor will then give him a key to the city and all the Dog Park's around TTG will now be known as "Duggy Parks"

I have even heard Plympton are looking into being called "The Red Duggs"

Im a bit of a fence sitter though when it comes to the medal. Yes its a raffle most years but this year across the grades, alot of names thrown around have gone onto win it, which suggests to me that this season the majority of the umps have got it right.

Look across the grades: Thatch in div 3 (was talked about on here as a favourite), Div 4 (Whealan and Cahill were mentioned, wooton was a surprise), Div 5 (Duggy favourite and Steele a deserved winner although many thought woodrow- Allen the surprise omission from the top 10), Div 6 (Jones- Surprise (i thought buss would be a shoe in and moser from KW probably would have won if not injured) and Div 7 (O'Gorman was never going to lose and tipped by many on here to take it out)

Dont know about the reserve grades or c grades but across the A grade i think most are worthy winners.

i always think its a surprise when a bloke wins the medal from a team thats only won 2 games. he was henleys best by an absolute mile all year but to say he was in the best three players on the ground enough times to win the medal i think is a bit of a stretch.

By the way well done to the lads on winning the medal very popular winners by the sounds of it. I dont know much about the lad from Salisbury West but i know Duggie can play the game very well and thoroughly deserves to win one.

I won it in Under 17s when we came dirty old bot-bot. The key to it was shaking the umps hands after the game and bleach ur hair, never failed!

Seriously though its bloody hard sometimes to work out who played well, especially when you are an impartial observer as most umps are. Its easy to work out who was best when its your team, or someone from the opposition has an absolute blinder and wins games of his own boot. For those of you that have umpired B Grade its been easy to work out who played will for your team, buts its quite often hard to decide who it was from the other team.

But when umps who have never seen the players before have to try and get the calls right and also work out who is getting all the touches, its not fun! On more than one occasion when umpiring A Grade SAAFL i waitied till sunday to check the paper and see who they had in thier best and see if it married up with the players we selected!

At the end of the day what would you rather have, an ump concentrating on getting the decisions right, or an ump so worried about who's getting touches that he misses all the free kicks for the day! Imagine that!

Nick Jones is a gun, is among the top five midfielders in that division and I like that the award went to a tough-nut, hard-ball winner. However, you are correct in wondering how someone can consistently poll 3 votes in games where his team was belted by 20 goals.

I look at one of our games that we won, where Liam Davis kicked 7 of our 12 goals, playing much of the game out of the midfield and virtually winning the game off his own boot...and he never polled a vote

Probably right

but wasnt the point i was making

Alot on here do nothing but bag the umpires all season, but then rate the medal which they decide on.

my point is that a B&F or a MVP (voted by team mates) would be worth more.

Good Post Jabber, I umpired 2 games this year and found it very hard to select the best players. I tried to talk to the other ump at the end of each quarter and write down the best 3 or so players from each team each quarter and then add them up at the end.

I found it very hard picking players from the forward line of my own team or defence from the opposition as you are not allowed to umpire in that area.

Not an easy job when your main priority is to umpire the game, get in the right positions, protect the person going for the ball and then block out all the abuse getting thrown at you.
